Antique 18k Victorian Marquis or Oval Shaped Elongated Diamond Ring
About the Item
18K Oval Rose Cut diamond ring with an abundance of rose cut diamonds, 28 on the border alone, surrounding a trinity of large diamonds at center and smaller diamonds as embellishments on either side of the trinity. The diamonds are set in the classic cut down setting of the Georgian/Victorian period.
Diamond rings, by the 19th century were most often used as betrothal rings (having replaced the posey rings of the eighteenth century). Note the drawing of a similar diamond ring in our photo array. This style of diamond ring with the oval shape and trilogy of larger diamonds in the center surrounded by smaller diamonds, was a classic Victorian style from the second half of the eighteenth century. The photo shows a design of a Victorian trilogy diamond ring from 1879, slighter later than our ring, and appears in Diana Scarisbrick's book "Rings, Symbols of Wealth Power and Affection".
The construction of the ring is typical of a mid nineteenth century ring, with the cut down settings at the front and the diamonds literally bolted into cut down settings and so that no claws are revealed to detract from the diamonds and the diamonds are securely placed.
Our ring is a size 6.5 US and can easily be sized to fit.
