Rare Art Deco Gilt Guilloche Enamel Teaspoon Set in Original Leather Case

About the Item

Rare Art Deco Gilt Guilloche Enamel Teaspoon Set in Original Leather Case Of pure 1920s extravagance with a custom rainbow of gilt, guilloche enamelled Art Deco spoons in the English style, all contained in the original tooled brown fanned leather case. The long-held tradition of collecting antique and speciality spoons goes all the way back to the 1800s in Europe when leisure tourism was just beginning to take hold. One of the ways well-to-do lords and ladies would demonstrate all the places they had travelled was to display custom collectable spoons from the regions. The tradition of souvenir spoons soon made its way to the United States, and the hobby was born. The unique features of this particular set are the multi-coloured gilt Guilloche enamel. The six different colours are infused into the English-styled spoons measuring 2cm (0.8”) in width by 9.5cm (3.7”) in length. Each spoon carries the hallmark of 1928 creation by local English artisans who fuse Art Deco with elegance. A special feature of this piece is the included fan-shaped tooled leather box with a clasp and soft interior to protect the spoons. This would have typically been created for a jewellery maker, but it found its use with these great spoons instead. The box dimensions are 15.5cm by 12.5cm. ------------------------------ Condition Report: In excellent condition with minor wear to the enamel as depicted and ageing commensurate with time. This actually makes the tooled leather pop a bit more. ------------------------------ ------------------------------ Provenance: From a private collection. ------------------------------ ------------------------------ Literature: Cf.:Michael Snodin, Collecting for Tomorrow: Spoons, 1976/ISBN: 9780801964022 Cf.:Dorothy T. • Rare Antique Pocket Key Watch French 1800s with Painted Enamel Dial
    Located in London, GB
Rare Antique Pocket Key Watch French 1800s with Painted Enamel Dial in Working Order An exceptional example of French craftwork estimated from the mid-1800s with delicate enamel painting on the dial and bespoke Roman numerals. Pocket watches have long been a token of style and refinement, even in today’s modern era. During the mid-1800s, this would have been a status symbol as manufacturing had increased so that it was more widely available. Everyone from businessmen to international travelers would have relied on a precise pocket watch to measure the train schedules, daily paper, and end of the work day. In this case, the unique painted enamel on the dial and custom Roman numerals would mean a man of means owned this watch. Instead of relying on a more standard manufactured piece, this would have been hand-finished, demonstrating more wealth. What makes this particular timepiece so rare is the polychrome decoration of a city on the water. When you look closely at the dial, you’ll find detailed decorations of a cartouche and flora motifs perfectly offsetting the silver casement. Both of the keys are attached to a metal chain, and the appearance of the monogrammed FB is evident on the cover metal. A French inscription on the interior reads: “Echappement a Cylindre Aiguilles Quatre Rubiz.” The keys refer to the critical winding and lock set for maintaining the watch. You can also see the makers mark numbered 9356 11509. ------------------------------ Condition Report: In worker order and high quality, considering it is an antique pocket watch. There are minor age-related marks on the silver casement and some fading that will be cleaned and polished before shipping. No damage to the enamel or hands. We service all pocket watches...

  • Important Exquisite Rare Antique Hardstone Gold & Enamel Cameo Brooch
    Located in London, GB
A high-quality gold hardstone cameo (Circa 1860) depicting a classical roman lady, probably a deity or Bacchante. The detail is magnificent, with intricately hand-carved hardstone coupled with fine gold wirework and beading. The blue and white ornate enamel decorative oval frame sets this Cameo apart from any we have ever seen. A truly stunning piece! Hardstone cameos are the epitome of cameo art, and their monetary value reflects this. The use of hardstones dates back to ancient Rome. Artisans in the late 18th century produced pieces with noble and powerful subjects, reflecting the revival of the art of classical Greece and Rome. By the time Queen Victoria ascended the throne in 1837, Cameos were characterized by romanticism and femininity and a revival of subjects from classical mythology. The passion for ancient history fuelled by archaeological discoveries and written accounts of the exploits of ancient civilizations made this period ripe for revivals of ancient jewellery styles. Many Cameos were carved in the neo-classical style popular in the late 1700s and early 1800s when taste in the arts echoed the subject matter and style of the Greek and Roman masters. Neo-classical Cameos...
