Pair of “Laila” Bouclé Armchairs by Ilmari Lappalainen 'Attr.', Finland 1948
By Ilmari Lappalainen, Asko
Located in Utrecht, NL
The “Laila” model by the Finnish designer, Ilmari Lappalainen, originates from 1948, with the earliest original drawings kept in the Lahti City Museum in their Lappalainen Collection. This pair of “nr. 238” armchairs are from the Finnish designer’s most famous series called “Laila”. The design became sought after by collectors even in its production time, which is quite rare in the case of Nordic mid-century modern furniture. Lappalainen was a renowned designer, famous for his designs’ comfort. Some of his designs even received medical approval because they had such a good seating, that it prevented back problems. These armchairs have a cosy modern style, modelled on the Swedish and Danish furniture of the time, including the round edges and generous seat cushions and back with five tufted buttons. The bodies have the classic Nordic look, which explains the contemporary popularity of these armchairs both among the public and museums. The modern aesthetic is further elevated by the soft sheepskin upholstery that complements the shape and the wooden, tapered legs as well. Wood is omnipresent in the Nordics, and Finnish woodworking is world-famous for its traditions. These chairs were created for Asko, the Finnish furniture manufacturing company founded in 1918 by Aukusti Asko Avonius, known for the production of high-quality furniture. By 1930, the company had developed into the largest furniture chain in Finland and the largest supplier of furniture in the Scandinavian countries. Favourites of this time included Ilmari Lappalainen’s present Laila armchairs...

Swedish Modern Lounge Chair with Footstool, Sweden 1940s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Before the war, “Swedish Modern” was a word which had a clear-cut definition in design terms. It was style-forming and came about through the determined aesthetic to raise the standard of the Swedish home and to improve the taste for a better quality of design. It is an inheritance coming from a rich tradition of beauty loving people who were courageous enough to break away from the swaddling clothes of the past to entertain new forms for living. In general, qualities of Swedish modern furniture include simple clean lines without excess decoration, made with mostly light-coloured woods, in this case, birch. This set has an understated, elegant look that is harmonious and well-balanced. The peculiar looking lounge chair has an elongated silhouette, with gentle, rounded edges and warmth expressed through the design. The long seat together with the footstool assures an exceptional lounging experience. The arms curve outwards, and the back has button tufting which are the main purely decorative elements of the design. Besides the seat, the bent back legs are the main distinguishing elements, serving a functional role. The thread running through Scandinavian design is functionalism, which is the most evident in the sturdy frame and the footstool, which further elongates the chair’s seat visually. At the same time, the half circle shape also serves a purely aesthetic role, enhanced by the buttons that also tie it together with the chair. The tapered birch legs assure stability and along with the bouclé upholstery, add to the overall modern, elegant look. Moving into the machine age, life became somewhat easier, and functionalism evolved into also meeting the emotional needs of people. This gave Swedish functionalism a more natural and humanistic side, which is evident when looking at this set. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chair and stool have been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Ado Ko Verzuu Toy Truck Houthandel, 1948
By Ko Verzuu, ADO
Located in Roosendaal, Noord Brabant
Very rare toy ‘houthandel’ (wood transport) truck designed by Ko Verzuu for Ado Holland in 1948. Ado means Arbeid door onvolwaardigen, translated; labor by incapacitated, which makes this an even more special piece. Toys by Ado are being highly collected at the moment, even more than ever cause this is very decorative combined with 1950s furniture from all countries! Jacobus Johannes Josephus (Ko) Verzuu, a former construction supervisor from Utrecht, led the ADO workshops. He had delved into architecture and art and developed a strong preference for the abstract lines and bright colors, which can also be found in the followers of De Stijl group from the 1920s, followed by Piet Mondriaan, Theo van Doesburg, Vilmos Huszár...
