'Monterey at Sunset', California Post-Impressionist Landscape
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
A substantial trillium monotype landscape showing a view of the cultivated fields and coastal hills of Monterey County, California bathed in the glow of a radiant sunset. Signed lower left, "Maxon" for John Maxon (American, 20th century) and created circa 1985. Coming from a western tradition in Wyoming, John Maxon developed an expansive view of nature and the spiritual essence it imbued. Moving eventually to the San Francisco Bay area, John’s delight in the effects of light and color led him to the decision to become an artist at the young age of 15. His natural ability was encouraged and, at 16, he began figurative art classes with Howard Brodie. Maxon spent his youthful days painting seriously in the fields behind Stanford University, and was fortunate to be exposed to and to study the works of Nathan Oliviera, Wayne Thiebaud and David Park during those years. He attended San Jose State University, and apprenticed for Sam Richardson...

Violet Chevron
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Kenneth Noland (1924 – 2010) is one of the most important artists and contributors to the evolution of American abstraction. He is one of the most beloved and enduring figures in the Color-Field movement. Unlike many of his contemporaries, such as Helen Frankenthaler and Sam Gilliam, Noland nearly rejected printmaking until later in his career. And once Noland began collaborating with the printmakers at Tyler Graphics (and other studios) he was more interested in using their applications to make unique one-of-a-kind artworks. This unique and intimately-scaled monotype is an excellent example of Noland's signature forms and aesthetic from the late 1970s/early 1980s. The chevron was a frequently employed motif of his, first debuting around 1963 and realized repeatedly through the years in different styles and medium. Here, Noland dissolves the strict geometric lines of his signature chevron or pointed "V", overwhelming the structure with color that appears to be either smeared, splattered or scraped. Lavender, pale rose, mauve, cornflower, chartreuse, ocean blue, ivory and pearl shift into and out of each other, yet avoiding the clear-cut stacked triangular outline of his signature chevron arrangement. Noland's chevrons are some of the most iconic and desirable works in the 20th-century art canon. This piece is a fine example of one of Noland's creations that showcases his ingenuity and mastery of color. Questions about this piece? Contact us. Visit our Toronto gallery on Thursdays or by appointment. "Chevron" 1983...

'Reclining Nude', California Post-Impressionist, de Young Museum, Fauve
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower right, 'W.Georgetti', and created circa 1950. Born in Italy, this California Post-Impressionist came to the United States at the age of one. Georgetti first worked as a merchant seaman to support his art studies and traveled all over the world accumulating sketches, many of which he later worked up into paintings. He made frequent visits to France, where he was influenced by the Post-Impressionists and, particularly, by the Nabis. An innovative theorist, Georgetti was the originator of the style known as California Fauvism. He exhibited widely and with success, both at exhibitions and at one-man shows (Oakland Art Gallery, 1942-44; Society of American Graphic Artists, NYC, 1944; Maxwell Galleries, 1940’s; de Young Museum...

Blue Maple IV ( 30 x 22 inch hand-printed botanical cyanotype)
Located in Oakland, CA
These are two unframed botanical monotypes. This species of tree is a Dancing Peacock Full Moon Japanese Maple or in Latin, acer japonicum aconitifolium. The actual Japanese name is Mai Kujaku. Cyanotypes are a kind of 19th century alternative (cameraless) photographic process. While traditional cyanotypes are a navy blue background with sharp white silhouettes, this is a double exposure cyanotype. The two different shades of blue are created by exposing some parts of the light-sensitive paper to sunlight longer than others. The monochromatic multi-tone effect is rather like aquatint etchings. Unframed. Although this looks like an etching or block print, it is a cyanotype, a type of 19th century cameraless photography also known as blueprints or sun prints. No ink or paint was involved and no photo negative either. This monotype was made by carefully arranging hundreds of individual blades of fresh-cut native Californian wild grass. The species of tall marsh grass is called Gray Rush or the latin name juncus patens. It is native to Northern California and grows in local wetlands. If not cut back, it it would grow over 4 feet tall. Every one of Christine So...
