"Around the Unknown Masterpiece" is an aquatint on paper from Picasso's 347 Series, with an image size of 9 x 12.75 inches, signed 'Picasso' lower right and annotated lower left, framed in a custom, closed-corner, gold-leaf frame. From the edition of 68, numbered 4/50 (there were also 17 artist proofs and a BAT).

In printmaking, the 347 Series was the undertaking which defined late Picasso. This prodigious outpouring of work, dating from March 16th–October 5th, 1968, deals with all of his old themes and fantasies, adding an obsession newly central in the late sixties, the artist as voyeur. It is in this role, rather than that of a protagonist, that the artist figures in these fantastic narrations. The series has been described as taking the form of a stream-of-consciousness epic. There is a suggestion of narratives throughout the series; however, there is never a point where a story comes to completion or where suggested desire is realized. There are faces we know, tales we have seen, and the work of great masters is recognizably revisited, but all without a clear endpoint. These prints become instead a stroll through the mind and memories at the end of Picasso’s much-lived life. A note about the technical production of these plates - to work with full freedom and concentration, Picasso had his printers, the brothers Crommelynck, bring the etching plates and hand press to his farmhouse near Cannes.

Pablo Picasso
One of the most prolific and revolutionary artists the world has ever seen, Pablo Picasso had a tremendous impact on the development of 20th-century modern art. Although he is best known for his association with the Cubist movement, which he founded with Georges Braque, Picasso’s influence extends to Surrealism, neoclassicism and Expressionism.
“Every act of creation is, first of all, an act of destruction,” the Spanish artist proclaimed. In Picasso's Cubist paintings, he emphasizes the two-dimensionality of the canvas, breaking with conventions regarding perspective, foreshortening and proportion. Picasso was inspired by Iberian and African tribal art. One of his most famous pre-Cubist works is Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), a painting considered immoral and shocking at the time for its depiction of nude women whose faces resemble Iberian tribal masks.
Picasso made many portraits in this style, most often of the women in his life, their expressively colored faces composed of geometric shards of surface planes. In Woman in a Hat (Olga), 1935, he painted his first wife as an assemblage of abstract forms, leaving the viewer to decipher the subject through the contrasting colors and shapes. Picasso was a tireless artist, creating more than 20,000 paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and sculptures. In 1893, he made the first of many trips to Europe, visiting Holland, Paris, and London. He became an arch-exponent of Modernism and the central organizing figure of 1913's watershed Armory Show. Davies developed a style that combined visionary Symbolism with elements of Tonalism and Cubism. Who Was Who in American Art describes him as an “…important but enigmatic Modernist whose work was poetic, mysterious, and visionary”. Davies was the recipient of many gold medals and prizes and juried awards and his work is held in the permanent collections of museums nationwide, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others.
