"Artona 8551" armchair by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Maxalto

About the Item

Stunning and very rare Artona 8551 armchair designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa and produced by Maxalto in the early 1980s. The armchair is made entirely of very soft biscuit-colored leather and is in excellent condition, featuring intricate stitching reminiscent of vintage luxury car seats. Extremely rare version, and currently the only one on the market, without wheels and without armrests, with the characteristic hollow cut-out on the back, typical of Scarpa cogniugi, rarer collector's item than the Africa model. Tiny signs of time on the leather as pictured give it authenticity and a beautiful lived-in patina. Afra Bianchin Scarpa (b. 1937-2011) and Tobia Scarpa (b. 1935) worked together as a couple in both life and profession, forming one of the most prolific and influential duos in 20th-century Italian design. Afra and Tobia Scarpa both graduated in architecture from the Iuav University of Venice, where they studied with prominent architects such as Carlo Scarpa (Tobia's brother) and Giuseppe Samonà. After their studies, they began working together at the studio of Italian architect and designer Carlo Scarpa, where they had the opportunity to develop their unique and sophisticated style. Their collaboration has led to the creation of numerous iconic projects in furniture and interior design, often characterized by timeless elegance and meticulous attention to detail.
