In 1830 William Hampton opened a shop for the sale of general household furniture in Cranbourn Street. He was subsequently joined by his two sons George and William Powell (the sons of George Hampton; Harold, Fred and Clarence also later entered the business). In 1869 the business expanded with new premises on the corner site comprising 8 Pall Mall East and 1-3 Dorset Place (now Whitcomb Street). Throughout its history the firm suffered a number of serious fires, the first of which occurred in 1890. Fantastic late 19th century Italian secretaire cabinet or bookcase made in the Venetian Rococo taste. Crafted from walnut the two-part case features a speckled lacquer finish centered by a cartouche shaped window with a painted bust by artist Ira Yeager (American 1938-2022). The bureau cabinet has a bombe shaped dresser base with a drop front diminutive writing table. The drop front has two storage drawers and a small pigeon hole storage above. Below the desk are two small drawers and two large storage drawers with rocaille patinated brass pulls. The dresser is supported by small cabriole legs with scrolled feet. The dresser is surmounted by a bookcase with a painted door depicting a nobleman holding a chicken. The painting is painted on board titled "Venezia" and signed by Yeager with a fictitious date of 1725. The door opens to a three-shelf bookcase. Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845) is documented in London Trade Directories of the period in various capacities but first appears listed at 7 Hanway Street, London in 1805 described as a '..dealer in china and glass'. But by 1826 the various facets of the business included '..buying and selling, exchanging and valuing china, cabinets, screens, bronzes etc'. Baldock's business seems to have largely involved trading in foreign items and between 1832-7 he was the purveyor of earthenware and glass to William IV and later purveyor of china to Queen Victoria from 1838 until his death. He is known to have repaired, re-modelled and adapted furniture...

Our antique furniture experts have dated this Victorian cylinder bureau to have been made around 1880.
The desk has been fully and meticulously restored by craftsmen in our own workshops and we consider it to be of “museum quality”.
This lovely Victorian Cylinder Bureau would make a bold statement wherever it was situated. Anyone who selects a piece of furniture this impressive to make their place of work will know that this cylinder bureau not only looks good but is also extremely practical. Just look at the copious amount of storage that is on offer for a start.
As you can see by looking at the range of photographs supplied, the Bureau houses numerous cupboards as well as a range of drawers of varying sizes and capacity and numerous other storage areas to accommodate copious amounts of stationery, books, office supplies and anything else that you like to have at hand when working.
The cylinder bureau can be positively attributed to the makers and suppliers Edwards and Roberts of London as it has a plate showing their name, as can be seen in the gallery of photographs.
The retractable top encloses a neatly fitted interior comprising six small drawers together with a bank of pigeon holes. The slide is finished nicely with an inset gold tooled burgundy leather writing surface.
