Louis XVI Tables

LOUIS XVI STYLE

Reflecting the final era of royal opulence before the upheaval of the French Revolution, antique Louis XVI furniture features more angular shapes than the Rococo curves of the Louis XV style, harkening back to the imposing grandeur of Louis XIV.

Dating between 1750 and 1800, an era that overlapped with the last king of France whose reign was cut short by the guillotine, Louis XVI furniture, known as the goût grec, is emblematic of the neoclassical revision that French furniture underwent during the second half of the 18th century.

Authentic Louis XVI furniture characteristics include clean lines and carved details such as scrolls and acanthus flourishes that were inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. This was informed by a burgeoning interest in antiquity in the 18th century, owing to new archaeological excavations at sites including Pompeii and Herculaneum. It largely eclipsed the more East Asian–influenced ornamentation of Louis XV for something more geometric and symmetrical.

The Louis XVI style was defined by what was being created for the palatial rooms at Versailles and Fontainebleau, particularly for the queen, with cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener being a favorite of Marie-Antoinette’s for his luxurious pieces accented with gilded bronze and marquetry. Furniture maker Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené was also a major designer of the period, with his pieces for the royal residences adorned with giltwood and neoclassical touches like tapered columns for chair legs and laurel leaf carvings. Cabinetmaker Adam Weisweiler occasionally incorporated into his furniture porcelain panels produced by Sèvres, a popular manufacturer of European ceramics that served the crown with serveware, vases and other decorative objects.

A French 19th Century Louis XVI Style Side Table, circa 1880
Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
A very good quality 19th century French charming two-tier side table with a single frieze drawer parquetry inlaid, designed with Allegories of Geography and Astronomy, with pierced three-quarter gallery surround, above a foliate and loop frieze, the front with a drawer, ormolu mounts and raised on delicate cabriole legs. The Louis XVI furnishings and decorative style started in 1774, at the begin-ning of Louis XVI reign up until 1790. The Directoire style will succeed. It followed a European movement return to classicism in the second half of the eighteenth century. Louis XVI, grand-son of Louis XV, became king in 1774 at the age of 20. Queen Marie Antoinette also very much appreciated the decorative arts. The middle of the eighteenth century and the Louis XVI style furnishing has been heavily influenced by the discovery of the remains of Herculaneum (1738) and Pompeii in 1748. Thus, was born the neo...

Antique French Louis XVI Bronze Mounted Writing Table
By François Linke, Jean-Henri Riesener, Claude Michel Clodion
Located in Forney, TX
A striking French antique Louis XVI style gilt bronze mounted writing table made after the model by cabinetmaker to King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinetteean, important ébéniste Jean-Henri Riesener (German/French, 1734-1806) and later reproduced by Francois Linke (French, 1855-1946). Signed bronze mounts, Marco. Born in France in the early 19th century, possibly during the late 18th century Louis XVI period, most likely Parisian work, exquisitely hand-crafted in several woods of contrasting colors including walnut and mahogany to create fine wooden inlays and parquetry detailing. The original partially inset marble top with dramatic veining sits above a flat sided break-fronted front and back adorned with fine bas-relief bronze plaques cast adorned with putti cherubs in the manner of the French sculptor Clodion (Claude Michel, 1738-1814). The centered front bronze panel disguises a single frieze drawer with dovetail joinery and original key, flanked by gilded bronze foliate mounted rounded corners, a simulated panel drawer to the reverse, embellished on all four sides by intricate finely chiseled, chased and sculpted scrolling laurel ribbon and garland swag ormolu mounts, patinated brass running ornamentation, rising elegantly on four bronze dore ring mounted straight tapering fluted legs, terminating in patinated bronze toupie feet sabots. Signed / marks; the bronzes are stamped / incised Marco. PROVENANCE / ACQUISITION: Property from the Collection of Gloria Monnet Nicholson, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Acquired from highly reputable auction house Heritage Auctions, Dallas, Texas. Fine Furniture & Decorative Arts Signature Auction, catalog #8085. Dimensions: (approx) 30" High, 32" Wide 21.5" Deep As warm and attractive as it is useful, having the ideal size and proportions for a variety of different uses, including as a side table, petite bureau...

Located in Baton Rouge, LA
A wonderful mid-19th century French Louis XVI style mahogany desk hand-crafted in France circa 1850. A beautiful, smooth top of flame mahogany is surrounded by a three quarter decorative brass gallery following down to two open center storage spaces and four roomy drawers in a removable riser.
