Keith Haring
'National Coming Out Day', Hand Signed by the Artist, October 11, Pop Art, NCOD

1988

About the Item

Hand signed by the artist in felt pen, lower right, above printed signature, 'K. Haring' for Keith Haring (American, 1958-1990) and dated 1988. 'National Coming Out Day'. Original lithographed poster printed at Pop Shop, New York, under the supervision of the artist This poster designed by Haring for the first National Coming Out Day on October 11, 1988 on behalf of the National Gay Rights Advocates, West Hollywood, CA. National Coming Out Day was initiated in 1988 by gay and lesbian organizations and has taken place ever since on every October 11. Haring's picture would, with different lettering, become an unofficial logo for National Coming Out Day. Haring was a prolific poster-maker, and among all his personally created posters, this particular work "National Coming Out Day" was chosen and featured on the front cover of the most recent updated official catalogue raisonne of posters by Haring authored by Jurgen Döring and Claus von der Osten from 2017, One of the key figures in New York's East Village art scene in the 1970s and 1980s, Keith Haring developed a unique and distinctly personal vocabulary of bold, graphic icons—barking dogs, flying saucers, winged figures, and a crawling "radiant baby"—which he combined with abstract marks and patterns in exuberant and, often, densely packed compositions. Haring attended the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh before relocating to New York City and enrolling in The School of Visual Arts. In New York, he was swept up in the energy and spirit of the thriving alternative art community. He was also drawn to the interactive nature of Christo’s installations and to the intersection of art and life in the work of Andy Warhol. Haring devoted much of his time and energy to public works, which were often the vehicle social messages. Between 1982 and 1989, he produced more than 50 public artworks in dozens of cities around the world, many of which were created to support charities, hospitals, children’s day care centers and orphanages.

  • Vintage Jim Dine Green Bathrobe exhibition poster, 1970s retro pop art font
    By Jim Dine
    Located in New York, NY
This original, vintage poster on poster stock features one of Jim Dine's most iconic motifs: the bathrobe. In 1964, Dine saw an ad in the New York Times: “The ad shows a robe with the man airbrushed out of it. There was nobody in the bathrobe, but when I saw it, it looked like me.” Standing in for the artist's own body and rife with personal meaning, it provides a framework for limitless formal and stylistic experimentation. Here, the garment is colored bright green and defined by variegated black lines. Numbers label each part of the robe as in an anatomical chart. Bold black lettering reads Jim Dine, Petersburg Press...
