A Color-Confident Garden in Nolita

Sometimes, all it takes is a single element to launch the design arc for a project. Such was the case for a young family’s Nolita loft crafted by Courtney McLeod, of New York–based Right Meets Left Design. Once McLeod homed in on Voutsa’s New Chinoiserie wallpaper to cover a 30-foot wall in the living room area, the mural-like kaleidoscope of color (snaking blue trees, fantastical green birds, curlicues of pink florals and the occasional gray monkey) inspired a charming, garden-like aerie brimming with whimsy, charm and comfort. Cue the ombré-green rug overlaid with a hot-pink throw rug; the sunshine-yellow ultrasuede tête-à-tête for cozy conversations; a pair of armchairs snazzily embroidered with water fowl and fauna; Kartell’s Victoria Ghost chairs, tucked to the side, in savory lime; and a glass-topped, caned coffee table that would look at home in the tropics. “The vintage brass lily side table [like the coffee table, sourced on 1stDibs] offers the ideal jewel-box moment and neatly references the wallpaper,” McLeod notes. “This space perfectly captures my motto: Always elegant, but with a wink and a smile.”
