How do you maximize a surprisingly oversize New York City living room? For art-loving, vintage-shopping creatives with children and a dog, the solution was simple, says Devin Hines: multifunctional, easily movable furnishings set against the clean backdrop of crisp white walls. “We brought in a variety of textures, materials and eras for tables and places to sit,” says Hines, principal (along with, from left, Natalia Ramirez, Kerry Offsey and Lindsey Reese) of the New York– and L.A.-based Hines Collective. Among the diverse pieces: a contemporary upholstered wood chair inspired by French mid-century modernism and a tubular steel-and-leather side chair by André Sornay from 1stDibs gallery Bernd Goeckler Antiques. The Volcano Island coffee tables by Gal Gaon, sourced via 1stDibs, are “sculptural, organic and understated, all at the same time,” says Hines, noting that they offer a striking counterpoint to the blocky vintage Italian onyx lamp tables, also from Bernd Goeckler, sitting at either end of the custom L-shaped sectional. Above the sofa, Andy Warhol’s Perfume Bottles shares a wall with a FLOS 265 wall light by Paolo Rizzatto. “The kids like to put on dance performances and use that lamp for a spotlight,” Hines says. “It may surprise some that this is such a kid-friendly space.”
