Let the Games Begin

“The objective was to create a space in which people could gather intimately at a table for purposes other than dining or work,” Memphis-based Sean Anderson says of this room in a house in the city’s Germantown suburb, which is meant to conjure the idea of a parlor in an old estate. Anderson, who describes his firm as dedicated to conceptualizing “custom, soulful spaces” for clients, found a map of Paris from the 1910s to hang on the paneled wall, establishing a backdrop for the design. “The map contributes to the room’s sense of pedigree, and I love the scale of it,” he explains. Seeking to introduce “tension between rougher, more rudimentary elements against finer elements,” Anderson says, he innovated clever juxtapositions: a substantial tramp-art-style custom games table and vintage plinth with an antique Persian rug, and 1920s English wood-and-leather school chairs with a contemporary smoky-brass multilight chandelier. “I enjoyed the exercise of designing an interesting, inviting place for people to come together and share in creative and intellectual pursuits,” the designer explains.
