Wood-Fired Hand Built Bowl with Shino Glaze
About the Item
This small hand built ceramic bowl is truly unique, from the rustic hand formed shape to the surface treatment. It was wood-fired in an "Anagama" kiln in Upstate New York, a traditional Japanese kiln. These kilns are made of special bricks built on a slowly slanting hillside with several firing chambers. Wood must be added to the fire over several days and nights. Heat and smoke from the ash swirls through the kiln, landing almost randomly on the work. Depending on its location in the kiln and any glaze that was applied, the effects can vary widely. This piece has a traditional Shino Glaze applied to the interior (making it water tight) with some around the rim. The shino captures the ash and creates a highlighting effect. The rest of the surface, deep reds and browns, is a gift from the firing, mostly uncontrollable and unpredictable! The three white marks on the bottom of the piece show the remnants of the dry clay, called "wadding", that is placed under every single pot in the kiln to keep it from sticking to the shelf - a feat in itself! Anagama kilns are rare in New York and are typically fired once or twice a year. They are quite large, take days to load and unload, and use an enormous amount of wood and human energy. It is always an honor to participate in such a firing.

Helena Starcevic Ceramics
Helena Starcevic Ceramics produces work that straddles the line between fine and decorative art. Each piece is one of a kind, hand-built entirely by the artist in her New York studio. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Ms. Starcevic's work includes references to the stark beauty of the desert, prehistoric cave paintings, and the human form (within and without). Everything is filtered through Ms. Starcevic’s own singular aesthetic, at once quiet yet strong, meditative, and beautiful. Pieces are made in different clays and finishes, and at different scales. Groupings are available. Helena Starcevic’s ceramic pieces are held in private collections across the US and Europe. She has held numerous residencies including one at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.
This exact piece is unique and cannot ordered due to the random occurrences during a wood firing. However, the shape and size of this bowl CAN be ordered. A glaze can be applied but one cannot expect a similar outcome to the one listed. Please call - I'm happy to discuss.
