Purple Reigns in Manhattan

“I felt strongly about using unexpected color,” William Sofield says about a private dining room he designed with Studio Sofield vice president Emma O’Neill for residents of a recently completed Manhattan tower. “I have seen the use of color diminish over the past few years,” he adds. “Everyone wants their beige monochromatic sleek ‘modern’ homes.” Everyone, perhaps, but Sofield, who explains that the strong blackberry hue of the walls, upholstery, draperies and accessories responded to the color of a ceiling installation by Nancy Lorenz evoking a starry sky in outer space — an artwork that had previously lived in Studio Sofield’s Noho offices. Channeling the glamour and extravagance of old New York, Sofield and O’Neill placed a Carlo Bugatti side table, a regal lantern reclaimed from New York’s historic Steinway Hall and a 1970s eggshell-marquetry bar cabinet from 1stDibs seller Calderwood Gallery. “These are not necessarily three items that would seem to blend,” says Sofield, who has fashioned exquisitely detailed retail spaces for Tom Ford, Harry Winston, Gucci and YSL. “But each one enhances and speaks to the magic that developed in the room. Curation is an important part of our ethos. I do not think there is anything worse than walking into a space and feeling like you could be in a showroom because everything came from the same store.”
