Tiffany Studios New York "Damascene Harp" Desk Lamp

About the Item

This desk lamp by Tiffany Studios, dating from circa 1910, features a damascene favrile glass shade on an adjustable patinated bronze harp base. With dichroic amber-golden and green tones, the subtly iridescent shade is suspended from an adjustable top joining slender, harp form arms raised on a base resembling a many-petalled bell or trumpet flower with muted red and green patination. This visually stimulating desk or table lamp provides a warm glow and, with its adjustable shade, useful directional light - a small and beautiful artifact of Louis Tiffany’s fruitful life spent exploring the phenomena of light and color. Product Details: Item #: L-20502 Artist: Tiffany Studios New York Country: United States Circa: 1910 Size: 10.00” diameter, 18.50” height Materials: Favrile Glass, Patinated Bronze Shade Signed: L.C.T. Base Signed: ''TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK 569'' Literature: A similar base and shade are pictured separately in: Tiffany Lamps and Metalware: An illustrated reference to over 2000 models, by Alastair Duncan, Woodbridge: Suffolk: Antique Collectors' Club, 1988. Shade: p. 111, plate 459; base: p. 126, plate 532. Curator's Notes: As a born artist, Louis Tiffany’s love of color and light was innate, but his interest in controlling and diffusing light with glass developed during his career as an interior designer. By 1885, he had collaborated with Thomas Edison in the pioneering project of electrifying the Lyceum Theater’s footlights. By the first decade of the 1900s, according to Robert Koch, over 500 models of shades and bases had been developed, some of which were unique.

This remarkable Tiffany Studios New York "Wisteria" table lamp is a very fine and unusually rare lamp, composed of a palette of wisteria blossoms in shades of blue, green, cream and white that cascade down the shade to an irregular border. The blossoms are surrounded by abundant leaves in varying shades of green and are delicately interspersed with "confetti" glass, lending them added three-dimensionality. The shade has a latticework top, portraying the branches and stems of a wisteria vine. The base, designed specifically to hold the shade, is also embellished with vegetal, vine-like properties.
