Drawing on the design sensibilities of his native Brazil, Andre Mellone — who established Studio Mellone in New York in 2012 — emphasizes organic, natural materials within what he calls “a mix of custom, contemporary and vintage” in his interiors. For the living area of a residence at the Four Seasons Miami, Mellone combined Block Island cane club chairs by John Hutton for Donghia, a 1930s Huib Hoste side table and a mid-century modern teak zig-zag floor lamp (“a beautiful architectural work in wood,” he says). A custom Studio Mellone daybed, an off-white Vincent Van Duysen sofa and a large black-and-white-striped painting by Daniel Buren complete the space. With the 1970s serving as a primary reference for the overall design vibe, Mellone selected a Milo Baughman wood table, rattan side chairs and a Wilhelm Wagenfeld white pendant light for the adjacent dining area. “They wanted something minimal but warm, and the seventies were a great direction,” Mellone says of his clients’ wish list. To honor that era, he says, he exercised restraint, combining just the right pieces, “each with enough strength to hold their own, arranged in an easy layout.”
