Fendi Lagerfeld 2000 Runway HighSlit FF Logo SilkChiffon&Buttons WoolPanelSkirt

About the Item

While he maintained his design-leadership role at Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld created this limited-edition silk chiffon Fendi-logo print to be glimpsed through multiple thigh-high slits created by his seven-panel A-frame midi skirts for the Fall/Winter 2000 capsule collection, which was featured at the Italian luxury fur-and-leather-goods boutiques (see our photo of the same print and skirt style on the Vogue-documented runway). On the bias-cut gathered pieces of fabric that form inverted billowing pleats between the silk-piped and topstitched black milled-wool panels of this skirt, the semi-transparent asymmetrical design in rose tones becomes visible while sitting or walking. In contrast to the print that turns Fendi letters into an almost abstract pattern, the iconic double-F "Fun Furs" logo that Lagerfeld designed is made clear on the many colorfully enameled golden buttons that fasten the skirt from the waistband to the hem. The buttons can be worn in back or in front. The colors of the print include pink, rose, mauve, burgundy, peach and brown. An extra red-fuchsia-burgundy-colored button with FF-logo was retained by the sole owner in case a replacement is needed. As the longest collaboration in fashion history, the Rome-based Fendi sisters hired German Lagerfeld (1933-2019) as the creative director for their venerable brand in 1965. Whereafter for 51 years, he designed ready-to-wear collections for over 100 seasons until his death. Remarkably while Chief Designer of collections for Chanel since 1983, he continued the creative relationship as a freelancer for Fendi, which was founded in 1925. This year, TheMet exhibited a retrospective of the designer's many decades of fashion, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line Of Beauty," when he was honored by Vogue at the 2023 Met Gala. He also played important design roles at Balmain, Patou and Chloe, while continuing to pursue art-related projects such as photography.

  • MartinMargiela 1990 1stRetrospectiveCollection1994 Sheer Black Convertible Apron
    By Maison Martin Margiela
    Located in Chicago, IL
Dating this minimalist convertible transparent black chiffon rectangular garment by Belgian former fashion designer Martin Margiela to Spring 1994 among his many variations of the traditional waiter-style apron that he reworked with his eponymous Maison Martin Margiela since its first collection for Spring/Summer 1989, the iconic corner-stitched textural white-cotton brand label is stenciled with seemingly contradictory text referencing an earlier collection in Fall 1990. Instead of the blank label that had become internationally recognized among the fashion elite within the brand's initial five years--before the presence of any other tag printed with the designer name--this black print was added in this manner for only one collection during its founder's tenure. The distinct typography specified the collection season when the new Margiela design had debuted since he selected favorites to re-edition from his first 10 fashion shows. This season-less self-curated retrospective collection without any new designs was unprecedented in the ready-to-wear fashion industry, which sold only new clothes typically two to five times annually. In the early 1990s, this old-made-new-again collection was astonishing for a Paris-based high-end brand, for which any lack of fresh designs for Spring had otherwise been attributed to the loss of an artistic director or the outbreak of war. Nevertheless, there are subtle differences of color, material and draping possibilities that make our re-edition unique from the 1990 apron and from later "replicas", which was the term that Margiela printed on a different kind of label for his second self-curated retrospective in Spring 1999 following 10 more collections. Aside from the text-printed brand label with four characteristic hand-sewn corner stitches, the only other element that unified Margiela's first collection of favorites was that all the items were overdyed a darker color so that the clothes were various shades of grey, blue or black depending on the original color of the textile and how much dye the thread/yarn absorbed. The first Margiela apron...
