Beautiful deep resonating ring tones await the new owner of this big one-of-a-kind vintage bronze bell from old Japan. Its beautiful natural patina makes it an attractive and desirable work of art. This distinctive dragon headed bell called ryuzu and remarkable protrusions called chi chi or nyu are crafted by generations old skilled Japanese specialists to improve sound resonance and are unique to Japan's ancient traditions.
This antique hand cast bronze temple bell dates to the Taisho period, early 20th century.
A scarce survivor, this rugged bell was gently used.
Please note its impressive cast dragon headed top ryuzu, thick walls and original dark patina.
Dimensions: 21 inches tall and 11 inches diameter. It has been used and possesses an original green aged patina appropriate to its age.

About Bonsho Bells "Voice of Buddha"
The earliest bells date to around 600 AD, although the general design is of much earlier Chinese origin and shares some of the features seen in ancient Chinese bells. Their penetrating and pervasive tone carries over considerable distances. The sound of the bell is thought to have supernatural properties. It is believed, for example, that it can be heard in the underworld.
In Japanese ceremonies, hanging bells are used for signaling during the prayer and for calling Buddhists to worship. Original Japanese temple "blossoming lotus" flower bud stems form an attractive double bouquet. Made for a shrine altar, these flower blossoms and leaves symbolize the stages of the path toward enlightenment. The individual parts of each lotus is assembled and then joined in an arrangement of two stems and two bouquets and inserted into the vessel. Called "Jyôka" and they are placed on or next to an altar in a Buddhist temple. In Buddhism, the lotus is an important symbol of divine enlightenment because it blooms into beautiful flowers while growing in mud. Tsunehana means "a flower that continues to bloom forever" and "a flower that does not wither." For this reason, the flowers represented are in different stages of their life, unfolded lotus leaves, buds and full flowers, thus symbolizing the journey towards Buddhist enlightenment.

Japanese Meiji Period Carved Wood Okimono Man with Rabbits
Located in Newark, England
The charming figure, carved from a single piece of wood is exceptionally carved showing the male figure with humorous expression holding two Rabbits one by the ears and the second under his arm. A third Rabbit stands at the feet of the male looking up, each rabbit with a different expression. The male figure is wearing traditional Japanese attire with his hair tied back stood upon a naturalistic base. The figure dates to the Meiji Period (1868-1912) circa 1900.
Notes The Rabbit is one of the 12 animals to feature in the Japanese Zodiac signs which follows the Chinese astrological system along with the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.
