Richard Fluhr
"Addicted to Money" Contemporary Abstract Green, Blue, and Yellow Painting

2011-2012

About the Item

Green and red abstract contemporary painting by Houston, TX artist Richard Fluhr. This painting features abstract blue eyes against a background of abstracted blue, orange and green shapes that resemble hands and possibly buildings. This work has a painted black border that creates an illusion that it is framed. Signed by the artist in one of the green hands. Unframed but framing options are available. Artist Biography: Richard E. Fluhr was born in New York City in 1955 and moved to Texas to work as an artist. Beginning with ceramics at age 15 and showing at Ola Podrida Gallery in Dallas, he moved on to the University of Texas at Austin. Fluhr received his BFA from the University of Houston followed by a MFA in printmaking at the prestigious Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where he graduated magna cum laude. He traveled extensively, painting life along the way in watercolor, oil or acrylic, usually on recycled materials, such as paper bags, pamphlets and receipts. Fluhr exhibited in six galleries in the United States and several galleries in Mexico, where he also maintained a studio in the late 1980s. His art has been shown in the U.S., Russia and Mexico and is represented in over 900 private and public collections, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, NY; the Cranbrook Academy of Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, MI; the Detroit Art Institute, Detroit, MI; and the British Museum, London, England. Richard has exhibited in hundreds of group and one-person shows, with work from Spain, Morocco, Italy, Portugal, Great Britain, France, Belgium, Greece, Hong Kong, Mexico, Costa Rica, Venezuela and all over the U.S., including New York shortly after 9/11. He taught at the Art Institute of Houston for 17 years and owned and operated REF Studios, a Houston art gallery from 1990 to 2000, at which time illness slowed him down and he semi-retired while collecting art all along the way.

  • Tango Pants #7 by Mel Rea, Acrylic and Pastel on Torn Canvas
    By Mel Rea
    Located in Atlanta, GA
Mel began her artistic career as a devoted clay sculptor. However, as time passed, she began to long for a change. Several years back she explored new options while exhausting more mediums than she can recall. It was during this period that she discovered a small batch of beeswax left behind from the last of her grandfather's beehives. Mel's grandfather, Sam Sekerak, spent his childhood in Russia where he was inspired to build an apiary farm. His dream came true as an adult in the States where he built and farmed his own set of beehives. As a young girl, Mel felt such a sense of peace walking amongst her grandfather's hives. She developed a very deep connection, respect, and appreciation for Mother Nature. Like many artists, she is a constant source of inspiration. This connection along with that old batch of beeswax is what led my transition away from clay and into encaustic painting (painting with molten beeswax). She is grateful for the intense labors of the beautiful honeybee, and consider beeswax a unique gift to be treasured. As a strange twist of fate, her name is translated in the Greek word for "honeybee". She loves traditional Japanese pottery and contemporary Japanese painting. The soft satin finish of the beeswax along with the ability to incise elegant clean lines, was just what she'd longed to achieve. While many Japanese works of art...
