About the Item

This is a rare, circa 1925 ink drawing by Lucretia Van Horn, the San Francisco Bay Area artist whose studies and work with Diego Rivera clearly influenced her wonderful “Chiconcua.” Van Horn achieves great depth between the foreground and background while relaying the story of a family gathering, pets and all. It is signed “L Van Horn” lower right, measures 10.25 x 12 inches, and is housed in a frame measuring 15 x 16.76 inches. While Lucretia Van Horn’s “accomplished, meticulous style” initially brought her early work as a book illustrator, her subsequent exposure to Diego Rivera’s work caused her to create more rounded, simplified figures pressed against a flattened picture plane. Her subject matter evolved as well, focusing more on the lives of women, especially those indigenous to Mexico, as typified in the grouping depicted in “Chiconcua.” Orphaned at age 14 after a privileged childhood, Lucretia Van Horn began art studies at an early age at the Art Students League of New York, then in Paris at the Académie Julian, where in 1904 she became the first woman student to be awarded Académie Julian’s Concours Julian-Smith Prize. Perhaps none of this artistic training had as much influence on her as did her experience in Mexico working on several murals with Diego Rivera. After this, and settling in Berkeley, she created many stunning, detailed and sometimes fanciful images of Mexican culture, including “Chiconcua,” circa 1925, in which the influence of Rivera is evident. Van Horn exhibited widely in the Bay Area throughout the 1920s and 1930s and was a well-known member of the local artistic community. With the death of her older daughter in 1932, she produced few additional works and did not exhibit again until 1943. The Van Horns were living in Georgia when Lucretia’s husband retired from the military in 1940, and in 1941 the family returned to Palo Alto, where Lucretia remained until she passed away in 1970.
