Condition: Remarkably fresh
Period frame and glass. The glass has small bubbles, which can be seen in the photos taken in daylight, but which do not interfere with the reading of the work when hung on the wall.
A pupil of Jean-Victor Bertin (1767-1842), Jules Coignet distinguished himself from his master's classicism through the naturalism of his landscapes.
Grand Prix de Rome in 1817, he stayed at the Villa Medicis with Ingres, Alaux and David d'Angers.
He was also a tireless traveler, touring the French, German and Italian countryside, tirelessly sketching the sites he visited, which he then reproduced in his studio on canvas or paper, notably as lithographs. He published numerous collections of views of his travels, as well as educational works designed to train young landscape artists.
Our exceptionally fresh work perfectly illustrates the artist's watercolor virtuosity. The use of white paper in resèrve, combined with the variations in hue of the ink wash and watercolor, gives it a remarkable balance, between a more descriptive, precise foreground and an almost synthetic background.
