About the Item
Roy Huse Collins was a Midwestern artist associated with Chicago and Minnesota. Born in Saint Paul in 1884, he exhibited often at the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) during the 1920’s and 30’s. He also exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy in 1925 and 1931. Collins was a painter and illustrator until he died in 1949.
This watercolor includes (on the back) the original exhibition label from the AIC in 1929. The work is titled “Steel Rocks” and certainly looks very Western and desert-like. Mr Collins’ address on the label is actually noted to be Palm Springs, not Chicago, so I am assuming he either visited there or wintered there. I am further assuming that this scene is therefore the Palm Springs area as well. It is signed lower right. It is actually nicer than what the images in this listing portray, especially as to clarity within the work itself.
The visible watercolor is in excellent condition and is vibrant, with crisp colors in the foreground and softer, slightly hazier colors in the distance. It measures 13” x 19” and is framed attractively and more recently with a fresher mat, inner liner and gilt frame, all of which are in very nice condition. Overall framed dimensions are 20” x 26”. The backside is papered and as stated features the original exhibition label for the piece.
A lovely view from 1929 and ready to hang on your wall or location of choice.

In the 1940s, Corbridge began to exhibit frequently, including at the annual exhibitions at the Jordan Marsh Company...Category
