About the Item

Born in Lower Austria in 1844, Rudolf Bernt was a painter and architect. He studied at the Vienna Technical University as an architect, and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Carl Roesner and Eduard van der Nüll. Beginning in 1870 he worked in Otto Wagner 's studio. Otto Wagner (1841- 1918) was an Austrian architect, furniture designer and urban planner. He was a leading member of the Vienna Secession movement of architecture, founded in 1897, and the broader Art Nouveau movement. In 1884 Bernt became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Bernt was involved in numerous works by Otto Wagner. He developed into a recognized draftsman and ornamentist. From the 1890s he worked mainly as a watercolorist. His motifs were typical vedute, precisely rendered views of a known site, such as the vedute Canaletto executed in Venice. Bernt's most wellknown work as an architect is the Georg Coch monument on Georg Coch Square in Vienna. The watercolor without the frame measures 8" x 11 3/4".
