French School 19th century, Le Lavoir (The washing place), watercolor on paper,

circa 1827

About the Item

French School, first half of the 19th century Le Lavoir (The washing place) Watercolor and pencil heightened with white gouache Bears a monogramm R P B on the lower left 21.5 x 33.5 cm Collector mark of Maurice Gobin on the back (Lugt L.1124a) In quite good condition: doubled on the back, a repaired tear on the upper border In a modern cardboard mount : 40 x 53 cm This watercolor has been attributed to Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-1828) and presented as by the artist by his former owner, the famous collector Maurice Gobin, he was the first to publish and exhibit it in 1936. Andrew Shirley author of the Catalogue Raisonné of Bonington works in 1940, published it also as a work by Bonington (Andrew Shirley, Bonington, London 1940 p 115, plate 112 see photographs please). Since then it's no more considered as a work by the british artist as Shirley's work is no more considered as reliable. Patrick Noon specialist of the artist and author of the last Catalogue raisonné refuses to recognize the hand of Bonington in this work. Whatever, it's realy interesting to look at this watercolor for its own qualities out of the questions of attribution. This charming scene of a daily life, probably in Normandy, illustrates the interest of romantic painters for this kind of subject, this precise aesthetic movement which would lead to the realist art of Barbizon painters.
