Temple of Diana at Baia
Gouache on paper, 10 3/8 x 15 1/2 inches
Label (recorded: now missing or under matte): "Tempio di Diana a Baja."
Although referred to as the Temple of Diana by 18th century scholars, this was part of a hot mineral springs bath and villa complex for the wealthy Roman seaside resort Baiae. Most of Baiae is now under water in the Bay of Naples, largely due to local volcanic activity.
