R.V. Goetz
'Female Nude', by R.V. Goetz, Charcoal on Paper Drawing

About the Item

This Richard Vernon Goetz Drawing on Paper from the mid-20th Century features a standing female nude rendered in black and grey cross-hatch lines of Charcoal and Conté Crayon. The weight of the very upright figure is on the left foot which is positioned a bit forward of the right foot. The composition is bisected by a horizontal ledge just behind the figure where her hands are resting. Her gaze is a bit upward and to the right of the viewer. The drawing is matted and framed in a wooden frame. Born in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, Richard Vernon Goetz grew up in Pryor Creek, Oklahoma and attended Oklahoma City University and the University of Oklahoma. He studied in New York at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. Among his teachers were George A. Bridgman and Jonas Lie. He also studied with Henry Hensche at the Cape School of Art in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He further broadened his training by extensive travel in Europe, where he studied the Dutch Masters and the French Impressionists. Acknowledging art as one of the highest forms of self-expression, Goetz continued to paint in a classic mode. His carefully composed still lives of American Kachina Dolls and a variety of rare Western, Indian and Oriental artifacts, suffused with a scintillating light, are balanced with contrasting hues. For many years after his marriage to Edith Goetz, also an artist, Goetz lived and worked in Oklahoma City where he conducted his own art school. A Grand Central artist member for over 25 years, Goetz exhibited with galleries in New York and Santa Fe. Goetz's many awards included the McDonough and Purchase Awards at the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio; and the President's Award, American Artists Professional League. Before moving to upper Westchester County, New York, where he maintained his studio, Richard Goetz painted numerous portraits including those of the late President John F. Kennedy and the legendary Washington party-giver Perle Mesta. He died in 1991.

This 11.25 x 15.25 work on paper features a lone, seated, female dancer viewed from the back. The figure is twisting toward the viewer as she begins to look over her right shoulder. Her legs are pulled toward her body with the left leg crossed over the right. The isolation of the seated figure within the ground of the page lends a vulnerable quality to the work. The 16 x 20 dark brown mat has a window size of 11.25 x 15.25. Bio: Jim Cobb, until recently was hanging his work on Canyon Rd in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
