About the Item
A beautifully executed, Regency era portrait of an older woman in a lace mob cap. She is sporting the tight curls around her face, typical of this era. She has a huge amount of character in her face which has been captured in beautifully minute detail. The artist has used the traditional miniature watercolour technique of using many small brush strokes to build up areas of colour rather than washes. This could possibly have been a portrait Mrs (E) Powell, the artist, best known for her beautiful documentation of rare and exotic botanical species, who was active around the time of this portrait's creation.
The painting is indistinctly signed in graphite at the back and inscribed "Mrs (E) Powell." There is also a framers label at the reverse. The painting is presented in its original papier mache frame with brass hanging clasp and an unusual, basket weave brass, oval inner window and traditional domed glazing.
