About the Item
Fritz Riedl war der Superstar der Textilkunst, der auch international reüssierte und ganz wesentlich dafür verantwortlich ist, dass dieses Genre in Österreich diesen Stellenwert erlangen konnte. Wenn man in Linz aufgewachsen ist, sah man seine monumentalen Werke regelmäßigen in den diversen Headquarters von Banken und Versicherungen.
Fritz Riedls Bedeutung als Pionier der nationalen sowie internationalen Textilkunst wurde 1963 mit der Verleihung des Preises für angewandte Kunst der Biennale Sao Paulo sowie durch seine Lehrtätigkeiten an der Universität von Guadalajara und der Gründung des Instituts für künstlerische Textilgestaltung an der Linzer Hochschule deutlich. Fritz Riedl studierte bei Albert Paris Gütersloh an der Akademie der bildeden Künste und entschloss sich bereits 1949 mit der Technik des Webens vertraut
zu machen, nachdem er eine Ausstellung über modernen französischen Gobelin besucht hatte. Bezeichnend für Fritz Riedl ist, dass er seine Arbeiten ohne Vorlage direkt
am Webstuhl gestaltete und somit „Entwurf“ und „Ausführung“ miteinander vereinte.
Mit technischer Versiertheit schuf er zahlreiche Bildteppiche, die zu anfangs noch von
einem flächenhaften Bildaufbau in dunklen Farben bestimmt waren, später von geometrischen Formen, deren helle Farbigkeit häufig von schwarzen Konturen umrahmt waren, abgelöst wurde.
Die kubistischen Formen auf dem Werk sind typisch für das Schaffen von Fritz Riedl, wie auch die flammenden Elemente und die orange-rote Farbgebung, wodurch der Teppich zu einem für den Künstler kennzeichnendes Objekt wird. Durch die erdigen Töne wird ein naturverbundener Eindruck erzeugt. Die floralen Strukturen vor einem starken Zentrum aus unterschiedlichen Weißtönen ergibt einen Eindruck von Schwrelosigkeit, der im starken Kontrast zum Medium steht. Eine kontemplative Arbeit, die bewusst die Grenzen von Abstraktion und Naturalismus auslotet.
