"Six Point Cutout, " Reclaimed Steel Sculpture, 2012

2012

About the Item

Renowned for his work with salvaged metal, American artist Gordon Chandler transforms weathered found materials into refined works of sculpture. With an eye to the aesthetic possibilities of this humble material, Chandler invests reclaimed steel with sculptural fluidity and a wry sense of form. Entitled "Six Point Cutout," this wall mounted sculpture traces the silhouette of a male deer head in a sheet of found steel. Part of Chandler's ongoing buck head series, the work makes effective use of negative space to evoke the image of a stag. Cut from an industrial oil drum, the steel is finished with a bright yellow coating textured with rust spots and traces of the original branding. Small six-point antlers add sculptural dimension to the piece, finished with a welded texture that imitates the bumpy surface of real antlers. Industrial and modern, we love this sculpture as a contemporary twist on the traditional mounted deer head.
