Kensho Scrolls:
“Kensho” is a Zen phrase referring to experiences of seeing the true nature of things,
the path to achieving enlightenment facilitated by meditation. In the Soto school of Zen, meditation is performed facing a wall. This is why these works show their subjects against walls or wall-like expanses. One interpretation of the pieces in this series is as a metaphor for ourselves as living beings engaging “the wall” to achieve illumination. The work in this series is realized as scrolls. This is a time-honored way of presenting images in Japan, where artwork traditionally is not left out indefinitely, but selected for contemplation for its resonance with a specific occasion, then put away. They are created in diverse materials including Japanese washi paper and gold, silver and other metallic leaf papers, expressing the different dimensions of our experiences of the beautiful moments in our lives. Each image is created in a given size and material only once, making it a unique piece resonating with the idea of ichigo-ichie, “one time, one meeting” celebrating the uniqueness of each moment, embodied with particular clarity in the aesthetics of the Way of Tea.

Kojun
Kojun is a self-taught American multimedia artist born in 1977 who lives and works in Tokyo, Japan. Working on his life experiences in Japan and building on his original university studies focusing on Japanese society, religion, and aesthetics, Kojun’s work explores the experiences of beauty glimpsed in everyday life. Having focused at university on Japanese society, religion, and aesthetics, he returned to his studies in Japan to pick up threads from Zen spirituality, Japanese aesthetics and the conception of mono-no-aware: the transient beauty of the ever-changing world. He continues to expand his perspective with resonant ideas from other traditions such as Daoist, Stoicism, and Neoplatonic philosophy. In these explorations, he has found all pointing in a certain direction: Showing a way forward by awakening to the beauty in every moment. Moving into visual expression in multiple media starting in 2019, this way of thinking is expressed in his artist’s name Kojun, written using characters conveying the idea of illuminating and enriching the soul. He seeks to engage with soul-enriching experiences of beauty in everyday moments. Realized in a variety of media, the pieces he creates are meant to serve as tools for the heart, objects for contemplation as markers on the path to illumination.

- Stamp Collection, Temple of HeavenBy Heidler & HeepsLocated in Cambridge, GBFollowing on from the hugely successful ‘Vinyl Collection’, Heidler & Heeps have collaborated again, drawing from the childhood past time of stamp collecting. Their unique darkroom process, like an x-ray, reveals the detailed make up of the stamp, which is not possible to see in the physical object. Nearly all take the appearance of a woven tapestry, intricate patterns and artworks from the 19th & 20th Century, are brought to life to be appreciated in the present day. And with the practice of stamp collecting enjoyed by todays older generation when they were children, the exotic imagery takes you to a far off land in a time when overseas travel was limited, the post marks make a physical connection with unknown people around the world. The collection is a documentary of history, dated postmarks connect the images to a time unimaginable and with these artworks you can carry on the British Psyche of ‘collecting’ building your own Heidler & Heeps Stamp Collection...Category
