Alphonse Mucha
"Sarah Bernardt as Hamlet", Alphonse Mucha Lithograph theater poster, 80x29 in.

1899

About the Item

Poster for 'Hamlet' (1899) catalog raisonné reference: Alphonse Mucha: The complete posters and panels, by Jack Rennert and Alain Weill, p. 239 (cat. 63) This piece is printed on two sheets. Sarah Bernhardt played the male hero in Shakespeare's Hamlet, translated into French for her by Eugène Morand and Marcel Schwob. Mucha stresses Hamlet's relationship with the ghost of his murdered father, whose figure looms in the background, stalking the ramparts of Elsinore. Hamlet's obsession with death is emphasized by the inclusion of the drowned Ophelia in the poster who lies decorated with flowers, in the coffin-like panel at Hamlet's feet. Hamlet was the last poster Mucha made for Sarah. The piece is finished off in a black ornate frame. 37500Alphonse Maria Mucha (24 July 1860 - 14 July 1939) was a Czech Art Nouveau painter and decorative artist, most well known for his images of women. He produced many paintings, illustrations, advertisements, and designs. Alphonse Maria Mucha was born in the town of Ivancice, Moravia (today's region of Czech Republic). His singing abilities allowed him to continue his education through high school in the Moravian capital of Brünn (today Brno), even though drawing had been his first love since childhood. He worked at decorative painting jobs in Moravia, mostly painting theatrical scenery, then in 1879 moved to Vienna to work for a leading Viennese theatrical design company, while informally furthering his artistic education.

Harper's June 1895 HARPER’S The German Struggle for Liberty JULY [Poster for Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, Jul 1895]. German soldier at the guardhouse. Four-color lithograph: grey, blue, yellow, and red. New York: Harper & Brothers, published Jun 1895. The magazine Harper's, issue of July, confronts the problems of The German Struggle for Liberty. Shown a German soldier in a helmet and armed with a rifle stands tall, and yet an uneasiness appears on his face. At a closer look, one will notice that not only does the soldier grasp his rifle in support, but in despair. This Harper's July is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed. An restored fold mark across the middle of the image keeps this image from being rated higher (for an original 1895 poster).
