About the Item

GUYON, MAXIMILIENNE (1868-1903) "MARIS STELLA" Lithograph in color, c. 1898-99 Signature in stone “Maximilienne Guyon”; lower right Sheet size: 16” x 12” As published in L’estampe Moderne, Volume 2 Paris, Champenois Under all the groomed linen, growing their clothed arms of rough wool or of thin percale, the women, whose knees lay on the wedged rock of the shore, look at the ocean towards the white island of Batz. The homes of fathers, sons, husbands, and lovers are over there, with those from Paimpol, Audierne and Cancale. Towards the North, look for the Spring to stop. What of bold fishermen that will not return! From the rumor of the sea and coasts, the plaintive song rises, invoking its high voices of THE HOLY STAR, hope for the sailorsin peril. And the angelus, watching all these dark tanned foreheads, moving over the steeples of Roscoff and those of Sybiril, flies away itself, chimes and dies in the pale pink sky. Jose-Maria de HerediaThe "L'Estampe Moderne was a collector's edition of 100 color lithographs from the most acclaimed French art nouveau artists of the period, appearing in monthly issues of four prints each between May 1897 and April 1899. Each contains the "blindstamp" imprint of the series: a head of a young woman in the lower right corner. The publication was distributed by Imprimerie Champenois, Paris. It contained twenty-four monthly portfolios plus four bonus plates each with commentaries or poems about the image. Almost all of these lithographs were commissioned especially for this series.

  • "Teeny" lithograph by Henri Matissse
    By (after) Henri Matisse
    Located in Hinsdale, IL
HENRI MATISSE (1869 – 1954) Teeny Duthuit-Garnaud 723 Linocut, c. 1938 From an edition of 1500 Image Size: 12.2” x 9.5” Published in The Homage to Henri Matisse Published by Galerie d’Art Contemporain de Paris Matisse's striking linocut shows Alexina "Teeny" Duchamp, the second wife of artist and pioneer of the ready-made, Marcel Duchamp. She was married to Pierre Matisse, Henri Matisse's eldest son, first and they had three children, Jacqueline, Paul and Peter. They separated in 1949 but Matisse was incredibly fond of his daughter-in-law until his death in 1954. Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954) is primarily known as the founder of the Fauvist movement, a result of Impressionism, whose works fundamentally altered the course of Modern Art in the late 20th Century. Innovative in his original treatment of the human figure and an expressive use of color, Matisse forged his own pictorial language. Matisse's career can be divided into several stylistic periods, but he remained focused on discovering “the essential character of things” through his art. Matisse considered his drawing to be a very intimate means of expression. The method of artistic execution — whether it was charcoal, pencil, crayon, etcher’s burin, lithographic tusche or paper cut — varied according to the subject and personal circumstance. His favorite subjects were evocative or erotic — the female form, the nude figure or a beautiful head of a favorite model. Matisse’s etchings...

RENOIR, PIERRE AUGUSTE (1841 -1919) "Une Mère et Enfant (Jean Renoir)" (Mother and Child) Delteil 10, Stella 10 Drypoint in color, 1896 Proof aside from the numbered edition of 100 impressions Published in “L’Album des peintres-graveurs; Ambroise Vollard Signature on the stone “Renoir” 10” x 7 3/4” Very fine impression on laid paper Renoir’s interest in the mother and child theme was awakened with the birth of his first son Pierre in 1885. In 1894 their second son, Jean, was born. This was the inspiration for this particular etching created when Jean was just two years old. Renoir was interested in Rubens and Delacroix’s rich use of color and loose rounded form which he observed in the Louvre in Paris. His appreciation is evident in this printThe simple positioning of the figures is structurally balanced, and shows Renoir looking back to Raphael’s Virgin and Child paintings...

Original Harper's July vintage poster; The German Struggle for Liberty. Original turn of the century lithograph by Edward Penfield. Size: 14 1/8" x 21 18" Penfield created this poster to publicize Bigelow’s lengthy history of the Germanic people, serialized in the Monthly as “the first popular interpretation ever given to the rehabilitation of Germany through the uprising of the German people against the Napoleanic invasion.” July’s number began the series, which was published by Harper and Brothers as a two-volume set in 1896. Harper's June 1895 HARPER’S The German Struggle for Liberty JULY [Poster for Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, Jul 1895]. German soldier at the guardhouse. Four-color lithograph: grey, blue, yellow, and red. New York: Harper & Brothers, published Jun 1895. The magazine Harper's, issue of July, confronts the problems of The German Struggle for Liberty. Shown a German soldier in a helmet and armed with a rifle stands tall, and yet an uneasiness appears on his face. At a closer look, one will notice that not only does the soldier grasp his rifle in support, but in despair. This Harper's July is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed. An restored fold mark across the middle of the image keeps this image from being rated higher (for an original 1895 poster).
