About the Item
Autograph postcard signed by Renato Guttuso to the Countess Pecci-Blunt. On the front, there is a reproduction of a detail of the Leonardo's "Cenacolo". On the back, there is a stamp, two postmarks (one in black ink of "Milano centro, Corrisp and pacchi"; another in blue ink "Gallerie e Monumenti della Lombardia") and the Italian artist's original signature in black ink. From the black postmark, the date and the place of shipment can be read: Milan, July 19th 1936. Excellent conditions, with two black ink stains of fingerprints on the lower margin.
Precocious talented artist, Renato Guttuso (Bagheria, Sicily, 1911 – Rome, 1987), wrote this postcard during his three-year stay in Milan, where he left for military service and had the opportunity to meet Manzù, Birolli, Fontana, Antonio Banfi. In this fervid environment, his social art took shape from a moral and political engagement more and more evident in artworks like “Fucilazione in Campagna” 1937, “Fuga dall’Etna”, “Vucciria”, finally consecrated in the maximum expression of Social Realism like in “La Spiaggia” (1955) and “Carretti in Bagheria” (1956). One year after this postcard, he moved to Rome where he got closer to artists like Birolli, Fontana and Persico.

He founded the artistic movement "Fronte nuovo delle Arti'' in 1947. After the war, he continued painting in his most realistic style, referring to contemporary political themes. Beginning in 1950, Guttuso took part in the Venice Biennale many times and he held numerous solo shows in many museums and galleries in both Europe and America.
