Carlos Cruz-Diez
Couleur additive Serie 7

About the Item

The Franco-Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez (Caracas, 1923) has lived and worked in Paris since 1960. He is a major protagonist in the field of Kinetic and Optical art, a movement that encourages “an awareness of the instability of reality.” Carlos Cruz-Diez graduated from the School of Visual Arts and Applied Arts, Caracas, in 1945. While still at art school, he worked as an illustrator for popular Venezuelan newspapers and magazines such as La Esfera, Elite, and El Farol. From 1946 to 1955, he was the creative director at the Caracas branch of McCann-Erickson, the international advertising agency, and contributed illustrations to the Venezuelan newspaper El Nacional.  He first went to Europe in 1955 and lived in El Masnou (Cataluña, Spain), where he began a defining phase in his career, creating his earliest abstract compositions (Parénquimas) and his first Objetos Rítmicos Móviles [Mobile Rhythmic Objects]. He visited Paris that same year, where he saw the Le Mouvement exhibition at the Galerie Denise René. In 1956 he quit producing figurative social protest painting and returned to Venezuela, where he opened the Estudio de Artes Visuales, a visual arts studio for graphic and industrial design. It was during that period that Carlos Cruz-Diez started developing the conceptual platform for his work based on optical and chromatic phenomena, a process that led to the creation of his first Color Aditivo [Additive Color] and Fisicromía 1, in 1959. He and his family settled in Paris in 1960, where he met and discussed his ideas with international artists such as Agam, Tinguely, Soto, Buri, Picelj, Morellet, Camargo, Lygia Clark, Le Parc, Calder, and Vasarely.

  • Les Jumeaux de Virginie
    By James Coignard
    Located in PARIS, FR
French painter, sculptor, engraver, James Coignard was born in Tours in 1925. He lived and worked in Antibes, in the Maritime Alps, and he died in March 2008. Coignard began his studies in 1948 at the School of Fine Arts in Nice; however, his journey as an artist began in the Côte d'Azur, where he settled. In fact, Coignard traveled a lot, living for a period from 1985 to 1988 in New Orleans. His artistic career was marked by collective and personal exhibitions both in France and abroad (Sweden, Switzerland, the United States...), where he enjoyed fame and recognition. Until the 1960s, his artistic development was characterized by an expressionistic style; then Coignard found himself moving towards an abstract one with random spots, regular shapes, typographical characters, and mixed media backgrounds. He was a painter but also a sculptor, who experimented with bronze and with glass. His work as an engraver was also quite well-known. James Coignard created his first glass sculpture in the 1970s at the Fucina degli Angeli. Only later, after meeting Adriano Berengo...

Artist: Roger König b. Dessau, Germany (1968) Master student of Kurt Schönburg, HWK Halle, Germany. König combines modern painting with acrylic with old techniques and in this way, he connects contemporary art with tradition. The natural clay color bestows the pictures with a completely special dim texture which stands in an exciting contrast with the delicate luster of the acrylic color. The features of the clay color allow a more intensive treatment of the surface. Often, there are lines, scratches or breaks in the surface, as if the canvas had been covered with a fair patina. More subtle strokes in the color bring graphic characters to mind, color gradients natural phenomena, divided canvasses the contrast which is immanent in everything: the principle of yin and yan. Roger König's works are in private collections worldwide. His admirers include leading figures in international business, film and media.
