About the Item

Joanne Freeman (American, b. 1954) Moon & Sun, 1990 Oil and wax on wood Overall dimensions: 31 x 44 x 3 1/4 in. Square dimensions: 24 x 24 in. each Signed, dated and inscribed verso Bess Cutler Gallery label verso The following is sourced from an interview with the artist by Boston Voyager (2018) "I grew up in Boston but now live in New York. My first experience viewing contemporary art was at the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University. With my college age cousin, I frequently viewed exhibitions of Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Roy Lichtenstein. These artists preceded and then reflected an era dominated by protest, rebellion and political upheaval. As a young teenager I was hooked and inspired. Against this backdrop of radical change all things seemed possible. I am now a painter living and working in New York. I’ve lectured and exhibited my work both nationally and internationally. I’ve also worked as a graphic artist, educator and curator. My paintings and works on paper are influenced by a multitude of artists and disciplines. I incorporate forms found in architecture, design, popular culture, art history and the unconscious. My reductive compositions and color mimic the low-tech graphics utilized in mid-century media, while also alluding to1960’s color field paintings.

    By Ross Bleckner
    Located in Larchmont, NY
Ross Bleckner (American, b. 1949) Untitled, c. 1970 Oil on canvas 43 x 34 in. Signed verso: Ross B/ho Ross Bleckner grew up in Hewlett, Long Island, New York; drawing all the time without being aware that other artists existed. He was the middle child between two sisters; his father manufactures electronic parts He attended New York University where Sol Lewitt, Chuck Close and others were his teachers. He graduated in 1972, then spent a year at the California Institute of Arts. His contacts in the next few years were very fortuitous; Sol Lewitt and Chuck Close, Carl Andre, David Salle, Julian Schnabel, etc. Bleckner is on the nervous side, beset by self-doubt, insomnia, and gloom. He is unpretentious, although he is bluntly handsome, with olive complexion, and a compact build. He is "10 percent that is superficial and 90 percent that has to do with the depths and that is threatened by living. He is a very complicated individual. He is a very, very morose, deeply feeling, hardworking artist- he takes a lot from within himself - but always, no matter how successful he is, he feels he is going to fall into those depths." 1 Bleckner first exhibited his work in New York in 1974. The following year he was given his first one-man show; he was included in the 1975 Whitney Biennial.. Since about 1985 has addressed many of his paintings to the subject of AIDS- both documenting it as a historical phenomenon and commemorating specific individuals who have died. Written and submitted by Jean Ershler Schatz, artist and researcher from Laguna Woods, California. Bio sourced from the Archives of askArt. • Cindy Kane 1985 Original Painting on Plywood
    By Cindy Kane

Cindy Kane (American, b. 1957) Untitled, 1985 Oil on plywood Sight: 31 1/2 x 28 1/2 in. Framed: 39 3/4 x 36 x 2 in. Signed lower right: KANE Signed, titled, dated verso: Cindy Kane, Untitled, 1985 Cindy Kane (American, 1957-) grew up in Washington DC during the Vietnam War era, absorbing the period's powerful political climate. She is a self-taught artist whose multi media work is born out of a deep sense of connection to the political and environmental issues of our times. Her early work was influenced by the experience of living and working at the bottom of the Grand Canyon National Park, where she had the opportunity to document Anasazi Indian pictographs in pen and ink drawings. These images would inform her work for years to come. She draws on personal narrative and experience to create her paintings of maps, birds, toys, and artifacts from nature, often collaging bits of newspaper headlines, pieces of her children's homework, and pages of sheet music beneath layers of color and imagery. In a review of her work, author and critic John Loughery wrote; "Kane leads us into a peculiar netherworld, a hard to place area that's both reassuringly ancient, and anxiously modern. This is a painter who is interested in the unconscious and the archetypal, and utilizes her own private, (but not inaccessible) vocabulary and imagery." In a submission to AskART, Diana Wilson...

“The oval paintings give the feeling that somewhere in their essence, invisible to the human eye, there is a light source, which disperses the cleansed and superior light through the reflective whiteness of the wall into the space.” Dr. Nataša Smolič In this oval artwork color is present like the natural reflection of the painted canvas outside the painting surface at the paintings back. So, the source of colour isn′t any electric source. It happens naturally like a reflection on the wall. I′m researching this praenomen more than a two decades. A non-material reflection on the wall appears as a reflection of the painted object. And in daylight it changes all the time. You are kindly invited to see a video of that process on my homepage : video1 and video 2. On the back of the solid wood support panel there is intensive acrylic paint, which is only visible as a reflection of red color on the wall. I used oil paint for the front of the painting. The wooden panel of the picture was hand-shaped at the front into a slightly convex shape. . . . . . In the past tradition of painting, only the frontal parts of paintings were always the carriers of the content. I broke this millennial tradition and focused my attention on applying colour onto the edges and the back of the painting. These parts of my painting compositions are hidden from the viewer's eye and are visible only indirectly – as reflections of the paint reflecting onto the wall area, addressing the viewer with their immaterial presence. This creates coloured light...
