Katherine Borkowski-Byrne
Artist Katherine Borkowski-Byrne, who works with experimental techniques and primarily in oil, describes painting as “a purely visual language that speaks to the eyes as music speaks to the ears.” This philosophy is evident in all of her work. Whether providing a brash cacophony or a somber harmony, each of her richly textured abstract paintings resonates with a distinct visual "melody" all its own.
After seeing a painting by Dutch-American artist Willem de Kooning — the de facto leader of the New York avant-garde art movement of the 1950s known as Abstract Expressionism — Borkowski-Byrne found herself on the path to a career as a painter.
And while she has also since cited the work of painters Henri Matisse and Wassily Kandinsky as having been influences on various projects of hers — a work that centered on the latter had Borkowski-Byrne painting with long-haired brushes attached to the end of a mop handle — the artist’s inspiration comes from many outside sources. She typically allows herself to dissolve into the process, casting aside whatever her initial concept might have been and letting her paintings take on lives of their own.
Born and raised in New Jersey, Borkowski-Byrne earned her BFA in 1986 from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Massachusetts. During her time at the school, she was honored to receive an award for independent work in which celebrated American painter Frank Stella was one of the judges.
Since her days at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Borkowski-Byrne has gone on to become a prolific and notable award-winning artist. She is an associate member of the Fountain Street Gallery in Boston. She continues to create melodious abstract works from her studio in North Adams, Massachusetts.

- "The Quiet Spot 3", abstract, landscape, twilight, blue, aqua, oil paintingBy Anita LoomisLocated in Natick, MA“The Quiet Spot 3” is a 25 x 25 x 1.5 inch oil painting on linen canvas by Anita Loomis that offers a sultry and dreamlike abstract landscape at twilight. With a modern romantic sensibility, the rich aqua blue tones, the composition speaks to stolen moments of solitude in private places. The is an opportunity to collect one of Loomis’ less frequently offered tonal works. Shifting shadows can be seen thru the veils of color; a treatment that lends the scene a truly quiet feel. The silky reflective surface and black gallery painted edges provide a formal finish. This painting is signed on the back. Anita Loomis is a painter who works from her studio in Kittery, Maine. Communication and the natural world are key subjects of her paintings. Her occasional tonal landscapes offer views of imagined natural spaces for escape and contemplation. Anita Loomis creates paintings that explore facets of human dialogue and relationships. Through painting, humor, and a deep curiosity about human imperfection, she investigates what it means to navigate communication with people who see the world through different cultural lenses. Loomis paints to shine a light on the common threads that connect our human experiences and spotlight the value of empathy. Loomis earned her BA in Studio Art from Framingham State University in Massachusetts, and her MA with a concentration in Arts Management from the University of Central Florida. She worked in the field of architectural stained glass for fifteen years and has focused on painting since 2004. She lives and works in Kittery, Maine. Her work has been exhibited at Miller White Gallery, South Dennis, MA; Fountain Street Gallery, Boston, MA, and various exhibitions in New England, Pennsylvania...Category

Over the top of a heavy base layer of plaster, Witwer has added various layers of oil paint, creating a massive amount of depth and texture. Sections of red peek out from underneath various shades of tan, grey, and black. Spots of blue and purple are used sparingly, hidden in the composition. Presented in a wood frame. Canvas size: 20"H x 40"W Frame size: 26.63"H x 46.63"W Unsigned, but was acquired with a collection of the artist's work. Provenance: Without a will and a family that had little interest in his art, nearly all of his possessions and close to 100 paintings were turned over to SF’s Conservators Office. His friend, Albert Richard Lasker, purchased all of Peter’s possessions (including the art) and has taken care of them until this day, always sensing there was something remarkable about the collection. Wanting Peter’s work to finally be seen, Richard came to Lost Art Salon with Peter’s story after reading about the new gallery in a July, 2005 issue of the SF Chronicle. Born George Peter...Category
