Lisa Corinne Davis is a Brooklyn-based painter best known for paintings and works on paper that resemble multilayered maps with encoded narratives. Her “inventive geography” prompts a wide range of interpretations, its open-endedness a stance she actively cultivates. The resultant mix of eclectic form and content is surprising as well as stimulating. Davis, who is African American, says her practice explores the complex relationship between “race, culture and history” and, with it, ideas about classification and contingency, the rational and irrational, chaos and order.
Lisa Corinne Davis (b. 1958 in Baltimore, MD) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She has held teaching positions at some of the most prestigious art schools in the United States; and is currently the Co-MFA Director at Hunter College.
Recent solo exhibitions include Jenkins Johnson Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (forthcoming); Pamela Salisbury Gallery, Hudson, NY; Esther Massry Gallery, College of Saint Rose, Albany, NY; Zolla/Lieberman Gallery, Chicago, IL; Galerie Gris, Hudson, NY; Farmer Family Gallery, Ohio State University, Lima, OH; Gerald Peters Gallery, New York, NY; and June Kelly Gallery, New York, NY.
Davis’ work has been included in group exhibitions at the American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York, NY; The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx, NY; National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.; Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase, NY; New York Studio School, New York, NY; Schloss Plüschow, Uphal, Germany; Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York, NY; and the Sheldon Museum of Art, Lincoln, NE, among others.
Her work may be found in the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.; New York Public Library, New York, NY; Philadelphia Museum, Philadelphia, PA; U.S. Embassy, Lomé, Togo; U.S. Embassy, Yaounde, Cameroon; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, United Kingdom, and elsewhere.
Davis is a member of the National Academy of Design and a 2022 Guggenheim Fellow in the Fine Arts.
