About the Item
Vintage comic books and mixed media on panel
Paul Ecke is a mid-career painter of contemporary non-figurative and figurative works on canvas and panel. His works are an amalgam of color, texture, and movement achieved through the application of oil and acrylic paints to canvas, all applied by brush, hand, and even trowel. The results are magnificent, colorful, thought and emotion-provoking images that convey the inner strength, conviction, and complexity of the artist.
Paul Ecke was educated at California State University, Fullerton, receiving degrees in art with an emphasis in ceramic arts and painting. His classical training taught him to represent the human form. His skill as a ceramicist affects his paintings, giving them a three-dimensional quality through the application of textural media to his works on canvas.
Ecke with his newest series “Comic Strip” can be described as a means of creating laughter and nostalgia. The collection is intended to engage the viewer in conversation. The heroes and villains in the different comic strips create magical fantasies that are rhetorical exaggerations. For decades, scholars have been making the connection between the design of the superhero story and the mythology of the ancient folktale. The comics become epic storytelling. The artist has created works of art that are a combination of vintage comic collaging, texture, and paint.
Ecke's works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Manila, Philippines and the Daytona Florida Museum of Arts and Science. He has shown in galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Diego, Palm Springs, Florida, the Philippines and Bali, Indonesia. His works are in many private and corporate collections including those of Universal Studios, Jimmy Z Sportswear, Taco Bell, Flojet Corporation, Carsey Warner Productions and Dionne Warwick’s collection. Works by Paul Ecke are already slated to be part of an endowment of contemporary paintings and graphics art to London’s Museum of Contemporary Art. Ecke has been the featured artist in numerous art publications.

- Untitled 0042, Original painting, Atmospheric Art, Industrial North, RomanticismLocated in Deddington, GBInspiration for my work comes from internalised imagery absorbed throughout her childhood in Northumberland and the North East of England. Images of declining industry, the closing of coal mines, abandoned shipyards and other associated heavy industries loomed large across the landscape. The atmosphere of loss, sadness was as palpable as the smell of smoke, tar and coke from the power stations. Philippas work consists of remembered imagery of past landscapes combined with the pastoral landscape in which she lives. The muted palette references the industrial while suggested imagery reflects the rural. Work produced references both worlds combining two genres, marrying post contemporary modernism with elements of classical romanticism. Two genres, two generations of artistic movements intersect with each other, creating a place where contradictions co exist. Disjunctive kinds of everything, hidden in plain sight, create a realm in which one can lose oneself. Implied abstract imagery reveals conflict between beauty and desolation ,whilst Romanticism and Modernism combine with clashing qualities of drawing and painting. Images develop through a series of intuitive acts. Repeated applications of thin films of ink and paint build depth and patina. Layers are often removed by washing and scrubbing, revealing a palimpsest of faded marks and former painterly decisions, exposing the underbelly, vulnerable and tender. Through Philippas current and ongoing line of enquiry several connections are being explored which are both real and notional. The fusing of genres, the industrial and the pastoral which combine elements of classical romanticism and post contemporary modernism, these relate to her past and her present surroundings. Rarely associated elements of drawing and painting are combined on canvas adding to the narrative of her personal story. Work produced displays...Category
