R B Bhaskaran ( 1942 - ) Paintings by leading Indian artist R B Bhaskaran, often large-scale and vibrant, use a stripped-down imagery that celebrates form, colour and ground. Only the best artists make a success from such simplicity. They capture our imagination and draw us into the work. These paintings allow us to explore an intangibility of thoughts, feelings, and fleeting private moments. Bhaskaran’s paintings are great artworks and great art often teaches us something about ourselves Just like his contemporary, Howard Hodgkin, Bhaskaran’s paintings are distinctive. The brushstrokes and limited palette of strong colours point us straight to the artist and the spontaneity of his forms. Whilst his images may appear to be simple in their choice of objects and shapes they are anything but, which is why they hold our attention and draw us in. Each work, peppered with mark-making, lines, dots, and colour spots, creates paths that expands the narratives the paintings offer. We see plants, trees and animals, pots and vases, people and cats. In Bhaskaran’s hands these forms become timeless images that confront us, commanding attention, yet allowing us to drift, explore and simply enjoy the raw energy. Ultimately these are great paintings to live with. They have a weight to them, a quality that comes from a great painter who is an acknowledged master of his craft and a leading proponent of the Modern and Contemporary Indian Art movement. R B Bhaskaran trained at The Government College of Arts and Crafts, in what was then Madras, today Chennai, India. He obtained his Masters in the UK and from 1970-80 expanded his practice at The Smithsonian in the USA. Bhaskaran has held prestigious positions within the Art World in India including as Chairman of the Lalit Kala Akademi in Delhi between 2002-2007. His work is held in major Public and Private Collections worldwide and he exhibited widely. Bhaskaran continues to live and work in Chennai, South India. Please contact us for more information.

Having started my career by painting Rembrandt-like portraits of luminous white roses, I credit my discovery of fractals for transforming my artistic vision, and changing the direction and force of my work. Always working with a single image of a flower, or a component thereof, I have stripped away the mask of the exterior form and magnified the interior thousands of times to depths beyond what is visible to the naked eye. My subject is no longer simply a flower; it is a dynamical system existing in a chaotic universe filled with energy, turbulence, mystery and beauty. Additionally, I have discovered that the system repeats itself through multiple phenomena. This is where I have taken the literal definition of fractals, and put my creative voice to the principles. Though the non-representational work may suggest a natural likeness - a wing, a wave, a shell, or even a human form - my vision invites a fresh dialogue between aesthetics and science. Whether creating evocative representational images or boldly deceptive non-objective work, my focus is always on the choreography of the movement, the organization of the space, the subtlety in the tonal transitions, and the intricacy of the brushwork.
