This large-scale, abstract statement painting is made with oil paint on canvas. The artist, Teodora Guererra, has layered paint onto the canvas using a palette knife, creating a highly textured abstract composition with elements of dark and powder blue, lavender, and thick layers of white overtop. Of this piece, the artist says, "This painting was the first in a series of thick palette knife texture. Like frosting a cake, I went at it with many mixed layers of paint laying down layer after layer. Every day I looked with fresh eyes and would then change something until finally the painting was resolved." A very large painting, measuring 72" x 48", it has silver painted sides and is wired and ready to hang. It can be hung vertically or horizontally depending on preference. Teodora Guererra’s abstract artistic vision has evolved throughout her years spent painting and teaching in Connecticut, Arizona, and New York. Arizona’s naturally radiant landscape and arid climate led her to experiment with rich under-painting and vivid color, while the shifting seasons of the East Coast inspired her to pursue dripping and staining techniques. Her focus has always been pushing the limits through experimentation with new materials. “As an artist," Guererra says of her work, "Painting can be tormenting and sublime at the same time. I'm a big risk taker, experimenting with different materials to layer, stain and saturate color on large canvases. My most successful work achieves a sense of fluid movement with saturated color, that is complex yet minimalistic. The end result should be a painting that dances across the canvas and quiets all the noise.” Guererra received her undergraduate and graduate Art degrees from Southern Connecticut University, The College of Saint Rose and Skidmore College. Her paintings can be found in public and private collections across the U.S., including the Allmen Health and Wellness Center for Women in New York and SUNY Brockport, NY, William & Sonoma, San Francisco, CA. She draws influence from artists like Pat Steir, John McCracken, Helen Frankenthaler, Donald Jud, Bernar Venet, Agnes Martin and Brian Rutenberg.
