James McGinley1884, original 22x54 impressionist equestrian landscape
About the Item
This commissioned oil painting, 1884, was painted by James McGinley for owners of a custom home in Gladstone, NJ on the adjacent lands to the United States Equestrian team. Inspired by the wagon and brisk gait of the team of horses, the piece was renamed 1884 reflecting the early western migration in America.
The coats of the horses glisten and their eyes lighten up as they reach full stride racing across the snow coated terraine! The periwinkle blue skies set off the proverbial purple mountains majesty set against the crisp white and golden turf. Artist James McGinley, former head of fine art at the famed Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art, displays his prowess in portraiture in his depictions of the equine portion of this composition. His impressionist brush strokes create a sense of motion in this oil painted equestrian landscape, a nod to his international pedigree from studies and painting on scholarship in Spain and travels teaching his students through Italy and then his period of work in the southwest United States prior to his later years in the northeastern USA.
While we mourn his passing during COVID-19 we recognize all the more the value of his diverse body of work, notably to the collector. McGinley's most inspiring teacher was the celebrated artist John R. Grabach.
