Saumya Bandyopadhyay
Bull Beautiful #3

2023

About the Item

"Concept note: One of the first depictions of livestock in art, this beautiful, majestic beast has pastoral importance. Its beautiful wide-bending curled horns and visibly distinct dewlap significantly improve its agile line work and amazing approach. The bull's power and virility preserve the human race and facilitate procreation. This magnificent entity, recognized as the most fundamental component of any culture, has been depicted with a daring masculine outlook that magnificently overshadows the character's virility. It appears as shaky, sketchy representations mixed with a grandiose linear treatment that boldly holds the volume against the textural qualities of colored surfaces. With his distinctive manner of approach, Saumya Bandyopadhyay uses the flow of the character he is portraying to guide his journey on the canvas. In the words of the artist, the thing is stuffed and bubbling with endurance and sustainability. The theme that encompasses the unique characteristics of the entity, the bull, holding its dominance over the presence for which it stands, is audaciously presented in this medium by Bandyopadhyay. The Bull series upstages its grandeur and occupies a very substantial position, highlighting the momentum of its highly energetic features, and is known to be boldly expressive for the subjects he picks. The artist plays a significant role in bringing the character to life with unrivaled captivating splendor and attractiveness, as seen in the bull with its protruding protuberance that increases its propulsion and thrust and the color scheme that is possibly unusual in nature. His works, which are fantasy-inspired in nature, are full of multiple dimensions of surreal, deceptive imagery. Mr. Saumya Bandyopadhyay is an alumnus of College of Art, New Delhi. Currently, he lives and works in Ahmedabad and working as Professor of Design."

At the heart of "Last Shot" is a young woman, the central character of this evocative piece. She is fully absorbed in the game of snooker, her posture and facial expression revealing intense concentration and determination. The artist has deliberately obscured all the colored snooker balls, leaving only the white ball visible. This compositional choice draws the viewer's attention to the player's anticipation of her "last shot." The backdrop of "Last Shot" is a dimly lit snooker hall, creating an atmosphere of suspense and intrigue. The faint glow of overhead lights accentuates the drama of the moment, casting shadows that add depth and complexity to the scene. The absence of details surrounding the white ball and the player's narrowed focus on it contributes to the overall feeling of precision and concentration. "Last Shot" is a visual metaphor for life's critical moments—those decisive occasions when everything hinges on a single move. By obscuring the colored balls and leaving only the white ball visible, the artwork symbolizes the importance of making the right choices, even when faced with uncertainty and obscurity. The young woman's unwavering focus on her last shot encourages viewers to consider their own pivotal moments in life. It prompts reflection on the significance of each action and the consequences that follow, reminding us that sometimes, a single move can determine the course of our journey.
