About the Item

This classic English school 12 x 16 in. Oil on Canvas framed painting features a pet Spaniel and cat resting on a desk in a home study environment. The dog is seated, its body facing the right side of the painting while its head is facing the viewer at the picture plane. The Spaniel has a long haired black and white patterned coat. Its long ears are black and curly and face is mostly black with an area of white fur on its head and a strip of the white down the nose and into the chin. The stomach and legs/paws are mainly white, while his back and tail are both black, although its full body is not visible. The domestic cat is depicted sleeping to the right of the dog, both positioned on a green desk. The cat is sleeping horizontally with the composition, its head on the left and its curled up body and tail on the right. The cat has mainly grey fur with patches of white on its nose, neck and the one leg and one paw that is visible to the viewer. The edge of the green desk, closest to the picture plane, meets with the bottom edge of the work and the left edge of the green table is only partially visible as the further half is cut off by the left side of the canvas. The desk is an olive green color and takes up the foreground of the piece. On the desk next to the cat is just a small corner of a singular document that reads "Young America" and then below that a couple of flourishes/ ornamental lines and the date, "1872." Behind the document, on the desk, are five standing books and two stacked books. The books appear to be up against the back wall that is depicted in the work, next to a hung landscape painting. The largest standing book's title is "Natural History," a greenish/blue hardback book with a maroon red strip where the title and author's name is on the book's spine. A smaller book standing on the right of "Natural History" is a copy of "Robinson Crusoe," a darker green hardback with a strip of silver for title and author upon the spine. To the left of "Natural History" is an untitled book and to the left is a copy of "Arabian Nights," a tan hardback with red/orange at the title and author's name. To the left of "Arabian Nights" is another untitled book. The two books laid on the desk, on the right side of the standing books, are both tan/light brown books. Since the books are not standing, the spine is not visible to us so the title and authors are unknown. The painting hanging on the wall, left of the books and behind the cat and dog, is a classic English landscape painting. The painting is interrupted by the dog's head, blocking our full view of the work, which is also obstructed because the hung painting is cut off by the left edge of the composition. We are able to discern a grey structure on land (seemingly a castle), some blue water, a blue sky with white clouds, and a large tree that stands in front of the castle. The entirety of the composition reads as a still-life or genre scene, in which we see an everyday scene at the desk in the study of an educated and presumably wealthy homeowner. The placements of the objects on the table adhere to the qualities of still-life painting, while the inclusion of animals reflects the idea of normal, everyday life, as depicted in genre paintings. The ornate wooden, gilt frame measures at 20 x 24" and is newer than the painting. The fluted frame is concave with embellishments at each corner and has a linen liner and gold filament framing the painting. The artist is Unknown.

  • 'Conquest, ' by Vojna Bastovanovic Casteel, Oil on Canvas, 2021
    Located in Oklahoma City, OK
"Conquest," by Vojna Bastovanovic Casteel, is a framed oil on canvas painting from 2021 that features an image of a running horse. Rendered in cool values of blue, purple, white, gray, the painting also features accents of warmer colors like pinks, tan and cream. The cropped view of the running horse accentuates its impression speed, while the emphasis on the rendering of its muscles heightens the physicality of the animal. The urgency of the scene is accentuated by what appears to be an approaching storm. Award winning Serbian artist Vojna Bastovanovic Casteel is known for artworks with natural elements, like people and animals (usually wild tigers and lions), that show selective flashes of realism often distorted by an abstract background. In her professional career, she has created hundreds of square meters of portrait mosaics for public spaces and large churches...

  • 'Worship of the Moon, ' by Katrina Dordevic, Acrylic on Canvas Painting
    By Katarina Dordevic
    Located in Oklahoma City, OK
This 38" x 26.25" acrylic on canvas painting by artist Katarina Dordevic refers to the transformation of the form and visual integrity, the conversion of samples displaced from the authentic temporal and spatial frames. The objects in the painting cannot be directly linked to the content of the literary origin or motif. These segments are quotes of descriptive elements from prehistoric votive sculptures of idols (the Paleolithic culture from Lepenski vir, the oldest urban settlement in Europe, situated at the banks of the Danube river, around 8,5 millennia old. They were shaped as unique anthropomorphic entities that represented presumably river deities. The meanings that were given to these symbolical sculptures changed over time, but the strange expression of the stone idols...

  • 'Red, ' by XVALA, Acrylic, Oil Stick and Spray Paint on Canvas Painting
    By XVALA
    Located in Oklahoma City, OK
This large scale 76" x 90" mixed media canvas painting by XVALA features a Basquiat-style large red creature predominantly placed on the canvas against a light blue background. Other colors include varying blues, golds and black. Acrylic paint, spray paint and oil stick were used on a linen canvas. XVALA's art illuminates the hidden fallout spawned from our high tech Internet age. His 'Fear Google' campaign exposed the decay of privacy and 'No Delete' used hacked nude celebrity photos to highlight loss of control over personal information. The artist has worked with trash from the homes of Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, and others, as well as dirt from the graves of George Orwell and Aldous Huxley. The dirt appears in the New World Order collection as part of a pyramidal, 3D printed, living ant farm...

  • English early 19th century painting of a chestnut hunter in a landscape
    By John Ferneley Senior
    Located in Bath, Somerset
A painting of a chestnut hunter in a landscape with a horse and rider accompanied by two hounds by a woodland river in the distance. Signed and inscribed 'Melton Mowbray', lower left. Oil on canvas in a giltwood frame. John Ferneley Sr (1782-1860) was born the son of a Leicestershire wheelwright, the youngest of six children. He is known as one of the great British equine artists, perhaps only second to Stubbs in terms of raw ability. Ferneley originally worked with his father, until by chance the Duke of Rutland saw some of his work on the side of a cart on which Ferneley and his father had been working. The Duke was so impressed with Ferneley that he persuaded John's father to allow him to become the pupil of Benjamin Marshall. Ferneley was so talented that apparently he produced almost perfect copies of his tutor's paintings and they were said to have been indistinguishable from the master’s. Marshall also enrolled him as a student of the Royal Academy Schools. In 1804 Ferneley paid a man named Thomas Harrison...

  • English 18th century portrait of a water spaniel dog standing in a landscape
    By George Stubbs
    Located in Bath, Somerset
Circle of George Stubbs (1724-1806). English 18th century portrait of a water spaniel standing in a wooded landscape. This charming painting is a wonderful example of the style of English dog painting made popular by artists such as George Stubbs and other sporting artists working in England in the 18th century who painted the dogs and horses of the aristocracy and wealthier classes. It follows in the ancient tradition of celebrating and commemorating our faithful canine companions through portraiture. Oil on canvas in a giltwood frame Provenance: Private collection, Somerset George Stubbs (1724-1806) was classified in his lifetime as a sporting painter, and as such was excluded from full membership of the Royal Academy. He is best remembered for his paintings of horses and his conversation pieces. Having studied anatomy, Stubbs's pictures of horses are among the most accurate ever painted. Stubbs was born in Liverpool, the son of a leather worker...
