About the Item

This narrative figurative painting was painted during the height of the pandemic and depicts the artist's very small quarantine "bubble" at the time: his partner and their two roommates, all watching a movie in their living room. It reminds us of our desire for connection, arguably even more needed at the time when everyone was mandated to stay apart. The classical and virtuoso paint handling with which the subject matter is rendered seeks to establish a conversation with more traditional art, for example, Manet's Luncheon on the Grass is clearly referenced in the position of the two reclining figures in the foreground, yet the imagery is unmistakably contemporary. This painting is indicative of the artist's wish to portray quotidian queer imagery in domestic or outdoor settings and belongs to a larger body of work that deals in related subject matter. Unlike many other such works, however, it is one of the largest and more more ambitious works in terms of complexity and execution that the artist has created in that series to date.
