About the Item
A late 19th-century cabinet-sized oil on chamfered mahogany panel showing an elegant interior with a maid-servant contemplating a copy of the Venus de Milo.
Signed lower left, "E. David" for Emile-François David (Swiss, 1824-1894), painted circa 1870. Additionally inscribed verso with artist information.
Emile-François David first studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Geneva and, later, with Charles Gleyre in Paris. In 1898, he moved to Italy where he lived and painted in Capri and where his palette became lightened by the Mediterranean sunlight. Over the course of a long career, David exhibited widely and with success and is well listed in all relevant art bibliographies including Benezit's Dictionary of Artists and Gerald Shurr's 'Les Petits Maitres de la Peinture, 1820-1920', (Editions de l'Amateur, Paris, 1979). The artist's work is held in the permanent collections of numerous European museums including Geneva, Lausanne and Neuchâtel.
Displayed in a carved giltwood frame. Frame: 12.5''L x 1.25"D x 14.5"H.
