Gio Colucci (Italian 1892-1974) Untitled: Abstract Figure and Leaves. Gouache on paper laid down on matt board. Archival framing under glass. Originally from the Con-Agra Corporate art collection. Circa 1930's? This piece may have been a sample for wall-paper as it demonstrates a repeating pattern and is unsigned. A simple three color scheme of vivid blue with brown and black supporting. The image is 13" x 19," paper size is 19" x 25," and it is framed under glass at 20 1/2" x 26 3/4" x 2." Born in Florence, Italy in 1892, he moved to Paris in 1911 to study architecture and then settled in Cairo in 1914. He returned to Paris in 1919 and exhibited at the Allard Gallery. In 1921 and 1923, he participated in the Salon d’Automne and in the Salon des Surindépendants with Gleizes, Herbin, Duchamp-Villon. Known as "the king of color", in his different periods of work - cubist, expressionist, abstract. In 1929, Gio Colucci exhibited at the Vavin-Raspail Gallery. In 1939 he took part in the "Groupe Eclectique" with Béothy, Freunlich, Gonzalez, Metsinger and Survage at the Berthe Weill Gallery. Colucci had successful exhibitions in 1945 at the Christofle Gallery, in 1947, at the Salon des Décorateurs, in 1952 at the Vallauris Museum in Provence and the Odéon Gallery, in 1954, Colucci at the Grand Palais Museum. In 1956, Colucci founded, along with Gino Severini, the Italian School of Arts. In 1959, a retrospective was held at the Juster’s Gallery in New York as well as at the Rodin Museum in Paris. A retrospective of his work is organized in New York in 1963. The Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris exhibited several polychromed wood-based sculptures, ceramics but also painted and sticked Arcopal glass by Colucci. The artist died in Paris in 1974.
