About the Item
Jean Duranel is a self-taught French painter, ceramist and sculptor who was born in Seine-Maritime and studied at the Beaux-Arts in Rouen and then in Paris. He is internationally known and established for years. He was awarded the City of Le Havre prize in 1974 and is now a member of the Biennale 109 (Artistic and Cultural Association).
His first works, around 1966, were more on the form and the plan then it is around 1985 that his characters make their appearance. From then on, we witness a theater of the little things of our existence as seen by Jean Duranel.
"A l'Olympia, Sonny Rollins" is a figurative and dynamic representation by Jean Duranel of a jazz concert by the tenor saxophonist and jazz composer, Sonny Rollins, at the famous and mythical Olympia hall in Paris.
The eye travels instantly, free as the air in the artist's paintings, it gets lost and discovers the history of the scene or scenes interpreted. Stories from all over the world, multitudes in one canvas. The characters or objects respond to each other in his paintings like a coming and going, subject to new interpretations. Without concern for perspective, it is the colors that create this effect of depth, plane and movement in his paintings.
Chance has nothing to do with it, everything is reflected and thought out intellectually by the artist to make the viewer travel and question him. Reality and imagination merge in a humorous or sarcastic touch.
These stagings are the result of a true story from around the world built with harmony and humor in a quest for love.

Jean Duranel
Jean Duranel was born in 1946 in Fécamp (France). Initially self-taught, he then graduated from the Beaux-Arts de Rouen and the Beaux-Arts de Paris. He was awarded the City of Le Havre prize in 1974. Jean Duranel's figurative painting is a journey into the artist's colorful imagination. He is a member of the committee of the Biennale 109 and former president of the Salon. He is a member of the Taylor Foundation. Atypical artist, he defines himself as an amused witness of the world that surrounds us. His art, qualified as singular, allows him to transpose his vision of the world, whether it is ideal or real, through the juxtaposition of scenes of everyday life. Although very structured, Jean Duranel's paintings are simple to read and understand. He is inspired by what he loves, namely cinema, music, meals and the different means of transportation that he finds as unusual as they are surprising. This way of reinterpreting the obvious through the technical play of the image is in the purest figurative tradition and stirs our jubilation. The artist plays with paradoxes and color contrasts, building his canvas from the traditional "tiling". Through his chromaticism, he reinvents space and rearranges time. Carried by the line, his telescoping, acrobatic juxtapositions, polymorphs between humans, things, animals and plants give birth to paintings and sculptures.
This dreamlike world (his own identity) takes us from wire to wire towards the unexpected, arousing the surprise of an emotion born of the discrepancy between the proposed situation and the reality of a story that owes nothing to chance.
