Max Nonnenbruch
Diana Nemorensis - 19th Century NeoClassical Oil Painting of Roman Goddess

Circa 1890

About the Item

‘Diana Nemorensis’ by Max Nonnenbruch (1857-1922). The painting – which depicts the Goddess Diana of the Woods beside Lake Nemi – is signed by the artist and presented in a fine gold leaf neoclassical frame. The scared temple of Diana Nemorensis stood just outside Rome in dense woodland surrounding Lake Nemi. Famous for its great beauty the lake lies in an ancient volcanic crater known as ‘Diana’s Mirror’. The emperor Caligula was a supporter of the Cult of Diana Nemorensis and had his two famous Nemi ships (two floating palaces) built on the lake. Max Nonnenbruch studied in the academies of Düsseldorf and Munich before enrolling at the Académie Julian in Paris. Nonnenbruch’s ethereal compositions contain many elements of the European Symbolist movement but as his career and technique developed his work became more closely allied to the elegant Greco-Roman school of the great English Olympian painters Lord Leighton and Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema; his figure painting in particular being every bit the equal of their contemporary John William Godward. The artist exhibited many times in Munich and Berlin as well as at the Galerie Heinemann in Nice. In 1892 he played an important role at the International Art Exhibition at the Munich Glaspalast. • Keicha: contemporary abstract gold still-life landscape painting w/ Black figure
    By Henry Bermudez
    Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
This is an oil and acrylic painting depicting a female Afro-Latinx figure with surrealist plant forms in the style of Salvador Dali against a gold background. In the Venezuelan coastal Afro-Caribbean community of Borbures, religious and social syncretism provided a unique vision of the African Diaspora in the Americas with its symbolism and iconography. Henry Bermudez is a seasoned Latino contemporary artist born in Venezuela and based in the US. Emerged from the Caribbean tropics, his artistic life has been an unexpected hybrid of ideas informed by an acute sensitivity to the past, stenciled as part of a personal inventory onto different foreign places that throughout his life have become his home and his artistic working territory. "My paintings are steeped in mythical dream imagery within an otherworldliness of carefully constructed creature and plant forms. Further defined by my identity as a Latino, my work combines symbols and myth from ancient pre-Hispanic cultures with the iconography of contemporary art. The result of this autobiographical vision is a blend of cultural diversities that further defines itself through my immersion in societies other than the one I was born into. Through my exposure to religious and social syncretism, my visual itinerary became charged with powerful influences which provided a unique vision of the African Diaspora in the Americas, its symbolism, and iconography." - Henry Bermudez Bermudez’s journey of unique geographical, artistic and human observation has taken him from educational experiences in small isolated communities in the Caribbean up to representing Venezuela in the Venice Biennial. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PA); Neuberger Museum of Art (Purchase, NY); Modern Art Museum of Mexico (Mexico City); Irish Museum of Modern Art (Dublin); Venezuela National Gallery (Caracas); Museum of Contemporary Art (Maracay, Merida, Maracaibo, Caracas); Modern Art Museum of Costa Rica; Museum of Art a Ralli @Punta Del Este Uruguay; and many private collections across the globe. Since his arrival in the USA in 2003, Bermudez has been commissioned by the Mural Arts Program of Philadelphia on several major projects. In 2011, he was one of a handful of artists chosen to work with the Philagrafika print collaborative founded by artistic director and curator Jose Roca. In 2012 Mr. Bermudez received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. He was elected to present an installation at The Philadelphia International Airport Art...

  • "Fence Jumper", oil painting, figurative, boy, flight, field, outside, summer
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
"Fence Jumper" is an oil painting with chalk and graphite on wood panel, and measures 16" high by 12" wide. It is finished with a clear resin across the surface, lending the artwork a particular warmth and liquidity that is rare and lovely to behold. Typical of the artist, the painting is a mystery despite its apparent simplicity – a boy, a young lad leaps over the fence, seen here mid-flight. It's clearly important to the boy. His focus and sense of achievement ring out. Drawn lines and painterly brushstrokes render the scene, but also note the toned wood coming through as color and texture. All of it held, as if in time, by the resin layer acting as a lens to both transmit this picture and admit light to the picture. A true artifact. From Will Hudson...
