About the Item
Flemish or Italian school of the 17th century Circle of Denys CALVAERT Oil on canvas 40 x 29.5 cm (52 x 43 cm with frame) Old label on the back ("N°9") Very nice 19th century frame in carved and gilded wood Very good condition
Our painting seems both close to the Venetian painting of the end of the 16th century due to the range of colors and alos close to Flemish painting of the same period because of in the canon of the characters and the characteristic composition, both collected and balanced. Some Flemish artists traveled to Northern Italy at the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century and a Presentation of Jesus by Denys Calvaert is very close to our painting (Sold on auction at Sotheby's in 1992). Nonetheless an attribution is difficult for our painting since Denys Calvaert founded a famous school in Bologna where many painters studied, notably Guido Réni, the Albane, Guercino and Dominiquin.
