About the Item
French oil on board painting of a bucolic picnic in the countryside. Presented in period chip carved wood frame.
The artist has been inspired by the painting Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe by Édouard Manet. They have created an intimate scene of four friends sharing a picnic in the countryside. The central character is naked whereas the others are in various stages of undress. The picnic is spread out on a fine white cloth, the wicker picnic basket to one side. A dog looks on from the side-lines hoping for something from the picnic. A very charming and intimate scene colourfully rendered.
Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe (The Luncheon on the Grass) – originally titled Le Bain (The Bath) – is a large oil on canvas painting by Édouard Manet created in 1862 and 1863. It depicts a female nude and a scantily dressed female bather on a picnic with two fully dressed men in a rural setting. Rejected by the Salon jury of 1863, Manet seized the opportunity to exhibit this and two other paintings in the 1863 Salon des Refusés, where the painting sparked public notoriety and controversy. The work is now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
